No. 21 Mariners Split Doubleheader with No. 16 Fire

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAKELAND, Fla.- The No. 21 Coastal Georgia softball team (27-7, 12-3) split its doubleheader with No. 16 Southeastern (25-10, 13-2) on Friday afternoon. The Mariners came back to take the first game of the day 5-4, but the Fire answered back with a 6-1 win in the final game of the series to take the top spot in the Sun Conference standings.

Elizabeth McGovern recorded her first win of the season in game one after coming in to relieve Bryce Peacock while Anna Feil got the nod to start game two.

Game one looked like it was going to be all Southeastern before a three-run homer by B. Peacock changed the tide. In game two the Fire again jumped out to an early lead and the Mariners again answered with a homer as Aniston Johnson recorded her seventh of the season.

However, Southeastern would not be phased this time as they did not allow any more runs and went on to score another run in the fourth and one more in the sixth to secure the series win.

GAME 1:
  • Fire came in feeling good after their walk-off win the game prior and scored four runs in the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead into the fifth.
  • The Mariners answered back as Bryce Peacock hit a three-run bomb over the left field fence to close the gap before Melani Jones, McCall Maret and Malarie Peacock loaded the bases.
  • The Mariners RBI leader Aniston Johnson delivered in the clutch, lining a ball to left field to bring Jones into score and tie the game.
  • Coastal Georgia was not done yet, however, as Julianna Bellflower reached first on an error which allowed Maret to cross home plate and give the Mariners a 5-4 lead.
  • After coming in for B. Peacock in the fourth inning, Elizabeth McGovern pitched two shut down innings, allowing just one hit and three walks to record her first win of the season.
  • B. Peacock checked back in late in the sixth inning to record her first save of the season and get the Mariners back to tying the Fire for the top spot in the Sun Conference.
GAME 2:
  • Like the game earlier, the Fire jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.
  • Johnson looked to repeat the happenings of the Mariners win as she launched a solo homer to left center field.
  • However, that would be the only Mariners run to be put on the board.
  • Southeastern added some insurance runs later in the game as they went on take the series win and the top spot in the conference.
UP NEXT: The Mariners will host a doubleheader against No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett on Wednesday, April 10 with game one starting at 1 p.m.
