No. 18 Mariners End Season in 11th-Inning Heartbreaker

Box Score LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.- The No. 18 Coastal Georgia softball team ended its season in Lawrenceville after a 6-5 loss to top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett in the 11th inning.

The Mariners got up 2-0 early after an Aniston Johnson double drove in McCall Maret and Melani Jones in the second inning.

However, the Grizzlies answered back with a five-run sixth inning to give them a 5-2 lead and gather all the momentum late in the game.

Bryce Peacock launched a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 5-3 game and after a quick three-up three-down inning from Hayley Dickerson in the circle, it was all on the bats to extend the game.

Things did not look promising after two quick outs, but after a single by Hayley Dickerson and a great at-bat from Sarah Thinger to draw a walk, the Mariners had things cooking.

Julianna Bellflower reached on an error from by the pitcher to then load the bases for B. Peacock.

Peacock stepped up to the plate and delivered another clutch hit, getting on first base and driving in two runs to tie the game at 5.

Both teams were battling fatigue, controversial calls and hot weather all day and made the game an instant classic.

In the top of the 11th, the Grizzlies strung together two hits and scored the eventual game-winning run after a very close call at home in the bottom of the 10th that called what would've been the game-winning run for the Mariners, out.

The Mariners had an unbelievable season, setting school records left and right, highlighted by a program-best 42 wins.

To the six seniors, Malarie Peacock, Hayley Dickerson, Melani Jones, Julianna Bellflower, Kayla Rowell and McCall Maret the College of Coastal Georgia thanks you for putting on the Mariners jersey and giving it everything you had every single day.
