BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Coastal Georgia women's tennis team fell to the Southeastern Fire in the quarterfinal round of the Sun Conference Tournament by a 4-0 final on Wednesday afternoon.
"The women showed some real fight today against a team that has been ranked as high as #3 in the country this season," said head coach
Zack Rogers. "It was senior day today and with five of our women potentially playing in their final conference match they came out and went shot for shot with one of the best teams in the country. Chloe got a huge win at #5 today playing arguably her best match as a Mariner. The crowd was electric today with well over 100 students, staff, faculty and community members in attendance today. We had a ton of campus partners who made this the best senior day we have had in my time here and we really appreciated the outpouring of support that we received today," continued Rogers.
The Mariners (4-8) duked it out with one of the best teams in the country, but came up just short in a few matches to ultimately drop their opening round matchup.
The afternoon started with the Fire (13-5) taking the doubles point, winning at lines two and three. Martina Picardi and Simone Simas took the second line by a 6-1 final while Maria Martinez and Irene Lopez took line three 6-4.
On senior day,
Chloe Do Lago played one of the best matches of the year at number five singles, as she won the first set 6-4, dropped the second set 6-1, and was down 4-3 in the third set when the match was called, going toe-to-toe with Irene Lopez. Ana Gonzlaez was also playing great tennis as she was up 3-2 in her second set when the match ended. Southeastern ended the match by taking line three with Ingrid Montserrat 6-2, 6-0, taking line four with Simone Simas 6-4, 6-4, and taking line six with Maria Martinez 6-3, 6-1.
"It was the perfect send off for a remarkable group of young ladies who continually set the bar as the highest achieving academic team in the athletic department. So grateful for the amazing experiment it has been to Coach Anna, Chloe's, Danielle, Lisa, and Sofia. They have left huge shoes to fill and made their mark on the college," finished Rogers.
Women's Tennis will finish their 2023-24 campaign with a 4-8 overall record and a 2-5 Sun Conference record.
