BRUNSWICK, Ga. — The College of Coastal Georgia tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to SCAD Savannah on Wednesday, falling just short in a closely contested match that came down to the wire across multiple courts.
SCAD Savannah grabbed the early advantage by winning the doubles point, taking two of the three doubles matches to set the tone heading into singles play. Cherry Xiang and Nora Louko handled Felicia Elixmann and Kourtny Kosto convincingly at the second position, 6-1, while Erin Passmore and Jess Johnson edged Freya Zayyan and Gabriela Miteva 7-5 at third doubles. The first doubles match was a much tighter affair, with Luna Feillon and Karlie Scott Kersey pushing Alessia Piccoliori and Asia Liverani to the limit before ultimately splitting 6-6 — a result that showed CCGA was more than capable of competing with the visitors when things were close.
The Mariners responded well in singles, winning three of the six matches to make a real contest of it. Scott Kersey was dominant at the top of the lineup, dispatching Xiang 6-3, 6-4 at first singles in the most impressive individual performance of the day. Feillon was equally commanding at fourth singles, rolling past Nora Louko 6-1, 6-0 to give CCGA another decisive victory. The third Mariner point came via a walkover, as the fifth singles match between Liverani and Miteva ended with a 0-0-0 result in three sets, suggesting the match was either retired or unfinished.
SCAD Savannah countered with wins at second, third, and sixth singles to secure the overall victory. Piccoliori defeated Gabriella Rodrigues 6-1, 6-3 at second singles, Lisa Konrad turned back Manon Baudet 5-3 at third, and Johnson closed things out with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Zayyan at sixth singles to give the visitors the 4-3 final margin.
Despite the loss, the Mariners showed enough competitive spirit and individual talent to suggest they are capable of competing with quality opponents as their season progresses.
