Mariners drop second straight to open season

Mount Vernon, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team couldn't manage a victory on the opening weekend of their new season as the Mariners fell 97-88 to Voorhees College on Saturday at the Brewton-Parker Tipoff Tournament.

The Mariners lost their season opener 64-59 to Martin Methodist after flirting with the upset of the nation's 22nd-ranked team for most of the game.

Turnovers were again a huge negative for the Mariners. They gave up the ball 31 times against Voorhees after committing 26 turnovers in the loss to Martin Methodist. The Tigers scored 32 points off the Coastal Georgia turnovers while the Mariners managed just 16 points off 19 turnovers by Voorhees.

On the positive side, the Mariners did get five players into double figures including junior forward Kentorey Johnson who scored a game-high 23 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds before fouling out.

P.J. Reason followed with 16 points for the Mariners while Reggie Burke and Dustin Henry both scored 13. Ryan Vines added 12 in the loss.

James Williams led the Tigers with 16 points.

The Mariners will go back into action Saturday when they host Erskine College at 4 p.m. for the home opener.
