Mariners beaten by NCAA D-II Valdosta State

Valdosta, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team lost its final game before Christmas break on Tuesday night, suffering a 104-67 defeat at the hands of Valdosta State at The Complex on the Valdosta State campus.

In front of a sparse home crowd, the Blazers overpowered the Mariners as they took a 47-28 halftime lead and proceeded to build on that cushion in the second half.

The Blazers are the second NCAA Division II team the Mariners have faced this season. Coastal Georgia also lost at Augusta State on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Mariners fell to 2-10 with the setback and will now take time off for Christmas before returning to the court on Dec. 30 with a game at USC Upstate which competes at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Coastal Georgia will play its next home game on Jan. 1 when it hosts Edward Waters for an 8 p.m. contest.

Tuesday's game was the second for the Mariners against Valdosta State. The Blazers defeated the Mariners 100-65 last season when Coastal Georgia was playing at the four-year level for the first-ever time.

The Blazers improved to 9-1 with this year's victory over the Mariners.

Despite the loss, the Mariners did place four of their six scorers in double figures. Reggie Burke, the team's leading scorer thus far this season, and Kentorey Johnson led the Mariners with 15 points each. P.J. Reason and Kostas Ezomo both scored 12 points apiece in defeat. Reason led the Mariners with eight rebounds.

Six Blazers scored in twin figures as everyone who dressed for Valdosta State saw action in the game. Shaquille Harris led all scorers with 19 points for the Blazers. He hit 5-of-6 three-point attempts in the opening half to help the Blazers get off and running.

Josh Sparks led the Blazers with eight rebounds. Colin Cook blocked four shots for Valdosta State.

The Blazers shot 52 percent from the game, including a 13-for-26 performance from three-point land.

The Mariners shot just 32 percent from the field for the game.
