Mariners fall to Erskine on road

Due West, S.C. - The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball dropped its second game to Erskine College this season, losing 63-51 Tuesday night at Belk Arena.

The Mariners lost to the Flying Fleet 91-87 in the first meeting between the teams on Nov. 10 at Howard Coffin Gym in Brunswick. That game was the first of the season for Erskine and also was the home opener for Coastal Georgia.

Erskine, which competes in NCAA Division II as a member of Conference Carolinas, improved its record to 5-1 for the season with the home victory over the Mariners.

Coastal Georgia, meantime, fell to 1-9 with the loss. The Mariners' lone victory this season remains its 67-65 home win over NCAA D-II Coker College on Nov. 20 which came on a buzzer-beating shot.

The Mariners led Erskine for a good portion of the first half that was closely contested, but after the teams were tied 24-24 with 4:34 left before intermission, the Flying Fleet closed the half on a 10-2 surge that gave them a 34-26 lead at the halftime break.

Erskine never trailed in the second half and led by as least five points throughout the entire final 20 minutes. The Fleet built their lead to as much as 14 points in the final 10 minutes of the game and led by double-digits for all but a few moments in those final 10 minutes.

For the game, Kentorey Johnson led the Mariners with 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double performance, but missed time in the second half with foul trouble which didn't help the Mariners. Also, P.J. Reason scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double. Dustin Henry added 10 points for the Mariners. Leading scorer Reggie Burke finished with just four points. Burke picked up two personal fouls in the first four minutes of the game and had to go to the bench for several minutes in the first half.

Erskine had four players who scored in double figures. Roderick Perkins led the Fleet with 17 points, Corey Sorrell followed with 16 and DeShaun Hall chipped in with 15. Sorrell led the glass effort for Erskine with nine rebounds.

The Mariners shot just 33.9 percent from the field for the game, making only 19 of 56 shots from the floor.

The Mariners will travel to Jacksonville on Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game against Edward Waters.
