Mount Vernon, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team pulled out a come-from-behind win Wednesday night, rallying to defeat Brewton-Parker 76-72 in overtime in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup.
The Mariners (4-13 overall, 2-5 SSAC) trailed 65-57 with 2:24 to play in the game, but scored the final eight points before the end of regulation to forge a 65-65 deadlock and force the extra period.
In overtime, the Mariners jumped ahead 72-67 only to see the Barons (2-12, 0-7) charge back to tie the game 72-72 with 59 seconds left.
Sophomore point guard Reggie Burke, who led Coastal Georgia with a game-high 26 points, put the Mariners back in front 74-72 with two free throws with 32 seconds left.
The Barons had the ball underneath their basket with a chance to tie or possibly win in the final 10 seconds, but Coastal Georgia forced a turnover to turn them away.
Brewton-Parker then fouled Kentorey Johnson who made two foul shots with 4.9 seconds left to seal the win. Johnson finished with 16 points.
In regulation, Johnson made a 3-pointer from the left baseline with 17 seconds to play to draw the Mariners even at 65-65. Coastal Georgia had a chance to win before the end of regulation after forcing a Baron turnover in the frontcourt, but Burke was stripped of the ball as he drove the lane for a possible game-winning shot and the game went into overtime.
The Mariners led 37-35 at intermission, but quickly fell behind after halftime and never led again until taking the lead in overtime.
Kostas Ezomo finished with 14 points for the Mariners.
Darrie Stephens led the Barons with 19 points.
The win was the second in a row in the conference for the Mariners, who won their first SSAC game on Saturday with a 72-71 win at Spring Hill.
The Mariners will stay on the road in conference for a game at No. 7-ranked Lee University on Saturday.
