Central, S.C. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team won in thrilling fashion back in January against Southern Wesleyan.
The Mariners roared back from a 21-point deficit to win 104-98 in double-overtime in the Southern States Athletic Conference matchup.
But on Saturday against the Warriors, a win wasn't in the cards for the Mariners as they fell 89-72 as Southern Wesleyan got up big in the second half again but didn't buckle this time.
After leading 39-30 at intermission, the Warriors (13-10 overall, 7-7 SSSAC) would take charge early in the second half, doubling their lead with an 11-2 run in the first 2:57 of the period for a 50-32 advantage and forcing a timeout by the Mariners (6-20, 4-11).
The break didn't stop the home team's momentum, though, as the Warriors would go up by as much as 28 points before even the first eight minutes had expired in the second half.
Coastal Georgia did cut its deficit after that, but nothing like it did the last time the teams met. The Mariners would only get within 13 points in this one.
Kenny Joyner led all scorers with 28 points for the Warriors on 14-of-21 shooting.
Southern Wesleyan shot a whopping 58.7 percent for the game.
Kentorey Johnson led the Mariners with 22 points.
Coastal Georgia got dominated on the glass as the Warriors outrebounded the Mariners 39-23.
Coastal Georgia will be at home on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. conference contest against No.9 Emmanuel. The game follows a 6 p.m. women's game between the schools.
