Mariners go winless in Florida

Ave Maria, Fla. - The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team fell 71-49 Sunday afternoon to Ave Maria in a non-league game for both teams.

The game was the second in two days for the Mariners (3-9) who played at St. Thomas on Saturday to open their weekend in Florida.

Coastal Georgia trailed just 24-23 at halftime but were outscored 47-26 in the seconnd half as they played their second straight game without senior standout Reggie Burke who is currently sidelined with an injury.

The Mariners never led before halftime and were down 18-7 with 8:39 to go before intermission, but closed the first half on an 16-6 run to get within a point at the break. They took their first lead moments into the second half, and though they quickly fell behind again, the Mariners stayed within single digits of the home squad until late in the game.

Ave Maria (6-4) pushed its advantage to 56-46 with 6:16 to play and proceeded to outscore the Mariners 15-3 over the remaining time for the runaway win.

Andrew Reid was the only Coastal Georgia player to score in double figures. He finished with 12 points. The team shot just 35.8 percent from the field, making 19 of their 53 shots from the floor.

Ave Maria finished shooting 51.1 percent (23-45) after blistering the nets in the second half when they made 13 of 22 shots to shoot 59.1 percent while pulling away from Coastal Georgia.

Exor Torres tossed in a game-high 19 points for Ave Maria to lead four scorers in twin digits for the team. Jelani Bonner scored 16 points and pulled down 13 boards to record a double-double in the win.

The home squad also controlled the glass, grabbing 39 rebounds to just 15 for the Mariners for the game.

Coastal Georgia is scheduled to play at Thomas University on Tuesday before breaking for Christmas.
