Brunswick, Ga. – The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team fell 76-61 Thursday night to Brewton-Parker at Howard Coffin Gym.
The win was the second this season for the Barons over the Mariners in the Southern States Athletic Conference. They won 91-84 on Jan. 15 when the teams met in Mount Vernon.
Brewton-Parker improved to 12-10 and 5-8 in the conference while the Mariners dropped to 4-20 and 2-11.
Coastal Georgia finished shooting just 33.9 percent (26-55) which included a 3-for-11 showing from three-point land.
The Barons led 29-27 at intermission despite shooting just 35.7 percent (10-28) in the opening 20 minutes. But, the visitors heated up after halftime and shot 59.3 percent over the final 20 minutes while taking control of the game. The Barons, who finished shooting 47.3 percent, made 16 of 27 shots in the second stanza including three of five from the three-point line after missing all six of their three-point attempts in the first half.
The Barons also were 21-of-29 for the game from the foul line.
McKell Miller led all scorers with 23 points for the visitors. Justin Quarterman and Deion Bernard added 13 and 12, respectively, for Brewton-Parker. Bernard also pulled down 10 rebounds to notch a double-double in the win.
Michael Matta led Coastal Georgia in defeat with 21 points. Andrew Reid and Reggie Burke added 10 apiece. Reid led the Mariners with eight rebounds.
Coastal Georgia led for the first 17:58 of the game before Bernard scored in the paint to give Brewton-Parker its first lead at 26-25. The visitors would go up by as much as four points before taking its 29-27 advantage into the break.
The Barons held the lead throughout the second half, going up by double figures in the first five minutes after intermission.
The Mariners got as close as 54-51 with just inside nine minutes to play, but saw the Barons reel off the game's next seven points for a 61-51 lead with 7:22 to go.
Coastal Georgia did pull within 66-60 with 2:36 to play and had a chance to get even closer. But after the Mariners missed a foul shot and a turnover on consecutive possessions, the Barons ran away for good, increasing their lead to the final 15-point difference.
The Mariners leave Friday for a game on Saturday at Mobile.
