Mariners Fall 1-3 to Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (6-10, 2-6) fell to Southeastern University 1-3 on Wednesday night.

The Mariners left it all on the court, but the Fire's (16-3, 7-1) stout defense and .255 hitting percentage were too much.

Southeastern took each of the first two sets before the Mariners were able to avoid the sweep with a 25-19 win in set number three. The Fire were able to close it out in convincing fashion, however, taking the fourth set 25-14.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • Raevyn Russell led the way offensively with 13 kills and added three blocks to finish with 14.5 points.
  • Rebecca Brown led the Mariners with 24 assists as Sara Hansen added 12 of her own.
  • Chantiya Johnson was a problem at the net all night for Southeastern, recording two solo blocks and assists on seven others. Johnson also added four kills to finish with 9.5 points.
  • Paula Perez Rosales and Sydney Martin both got nine kills each, and Martin led the team with a .389 hitting percentage and tied a career high in digs with six.
  • Elena Gkiourda rounded out the Mariners scoring with three kills.
  • Seven different Mariners recorded five or more digs including Skylar Gribben (8), Perez Rosales (8), Kira Matthias (7), Brown (6), Martin (6), Jenna Rogers (5), Hansen (5).
COACHES CORNER- Val Every

"Southeastern is a tough matchup. Trying to come into their house and upset them with the team they have this year is a tall task, but I think our team stepped up and embraced the challenge despite the result. We were able to take a set off them again, and did so with convincingly. Sydney Martin and Kira Matthias stepped up big time and played well in their roles. I am looking forward to our homecoming match on Saturday against Ave Maria."
