LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.- The No. 18 Coastal Georgia softball team (3-4, 0-0) was swept by No. 14 Georgia Gwinnett (8-1, 0-0) in their doubleheader on Saturday. The games were a part of the 2023 Grizzly Classic that featured four teams in a round-robin style tournament. The Grizzlies won the first game 4-3 on a walk-off hit and then won the second game 4-0 thanks to a two-hit shutout by stud pitcher Annalise Wood.
10-year Head Coach Mike Minick knew that the Mariners would have a tough weekend ahead of them since they did not have many games under their belt heading into to such a competitive field, but in two of the four games they lost, they held a lead going into the seventh inning.
Game 1:
The Mariners looked strong against the Grizzlies, scoring a run in each of the first two innings while Bryce Peacock shut them down on the other side. A Sarah Thinger sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning concluded the scoring for the Mariners, and the Grizzlies went on to score four unanswered runs including two in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
As a team, the Mariners only had five hits but were helped out by three Georgia Gwinnett errors.
Game 2:
Georgia Gwinnett's momentum from the first game carried over into the second as the scored three first-inning runs on three hits. With their ace Annalise Wood on the mound, it was a big task to try and come back.
Wood got the better of the Mariner lineup, allowing just two hits and striking out eight in a complete game shutout performance.
UP NEXT: Coastal Georgia will look to regroup quickly as they host their first home series against Brewton-Parker on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
