BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (6-19, 4-11) fell to Webber International (10-14, 7-7) by a score of 65-57 on Saturday evening. This loss eliminates the Mariners from Sun Conference Tournament contention.
The Mariners' day got off to a rough start as the game had to be delayed due to an accident involving the team's bus. Thankfully, everyone involved in the accident was unharmed.
Sonia Forney led the way for Coastal Georgia, recording 25 points on an impressive 10-14 shooting and also added nine rebounds. Fellow senior Joyce Jordan scored 16 points and eclipsed 1,500 career points in the process.
Nicole Hofmann was the other major scorer for the Mariners, putting in 10 points. Andranique Voorhies had a big day on the glass, grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds all in just 15 minutes of play.
Iesha Rhodin, Victoria Hickman and Voorhies combined for the team's final six points.
For the Warriors, Jaida Burgess scored a game-high 26 points while also recording 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Burgess had a hand in every aspect of her team's win to keep their postseason chances alive and well.
Alexandria Lemmon and Triniti Lee also finished in double figures for Webber, recording 11 points each. Lemmon hit two three-pointers and also snagged eight rebounds.
How It Happened:
1st Quarter:
- The game got off to a sloppy start with each team turning the ball over seven times and Coastal Georgia shooting just 2-11 from the field.
- The Warriors, who are last in the Sun Conference in made three-pointers, rattled home three of their first five attempts from beyond the arc to give them an early 14-6 lead.
2nd Quarter:
- The Mariners got back on track in terms of shooting in the second quarter, going 7-14 from the field.
- The Warriors struggled from the field this time, going 3-17 but were able to make 8 of their 12 free throw attempts to maintain a 30-26 lead going into the break.
- Turnovers still plagued the Mariners in the quarter, giving it away five times while the Warriors only turned it over once.
3rd Quarter:
- The Mariners were able to chip into the lead and cut it down to four before the Warriors went on a 7-2 run to get their lead back up to nine.
- Samantha Pacheco nailed a jumper at the end of the quarter to help Webber maintain a nine-point lead heading into the final quarter.
4th Quarter:
- With the score at 51-42 in favor of the Warriors, the Mariners went on a 10-2 run to bring the game within one.
- Jaida Burgess went on to score six straight points to ice the game and get the Warriors their 10th win of the season.
