No. 25 Mariners Split Sun Conference Opener; Dickerson Now All-Time Strikeout Leader

THOMASVILLE, Ga.- The No. 25 Coastal Georgia softball team (12-5, 1-1) split its Sun Conference opener against Thomas University (8-9, 1-1) on Saturday after taking the first game 5-1 before dropping the second game 3-4.

Senior pitcher Hayley Dickerson broke schools record for career strikeouts in her game one outing. Dickerson pitched a complete seven innings while allowing just one run and striking out six batters on her way to win number seven on the season.

MacKenzie Kagee led way offensively for the Mariners. She tallied a home run in both games, which now gives her three on the year and puts her at second in the Sun Conference behind teammate Aniston Johnson.

GAME 1:
  • The Mariners were went down 1-0 after a second inning home run by Vialpando, but were able to get back in it thanks to Dickerson shutting down the Nighthawks the rest of the game.
  • Melani Jones got her team started with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
  • The Mariners went on to score two more runs in the fifth inning off a Malarie Peacock RBI single and a Sarah Thinger RBI single.
  • The final two runs came in the sixth inning of a two-run blast by Kagee to secure the Mariners 5-1 win and grab the teams first Sun Conference win of the season.
GAME 2:
  • The Mariners again went down 1-0 early after an RBI double in the first inning by Killingsw.
  • But Kagee was able to answer back in the next half inning with a solo shot to knot the game at 1-1.
  • The Nighthawks were able to get three runs across in the third inning thanks to Killingsw again and a two-RBI double by Boggs, which would eventually be the winning run.
  • Kayla Rowell got the Mariners back within one in the fourth inning with a single that led to an error in the outfield that allowed McCall Maret and Melani Jones to score.
  • However, the Mariners could not get anything going in final three innings despite holding Thomas to no more runs after the third.
