(RV) Mariners Show Fight with 4-3 Win Over (RV) Brenau

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The (RV) Coastal Georgia women's tennis team (4-1, 0-1) defeated (RV) Brenau University (5-4) by a score of 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Marta B. Torrey Tennis Complex.

This is just the third time the Mariners have beaten Brenau and their first win since 2017 when they beat them twice that season.

"We know every time we face Brenau it's going to be a tough match," said Head Coach and Interim Athletics Director Zack Rogers. "Brenau is a team with a lot of tradition connected to them and it has always been a struggle for Coastal to pick up the win against them."

Early on it looked like the Tigers might record their 10th all-time win over the Mariners, but Coastal Georgia did not bow down.

The Mariners struggled in doubles, dropping matches at courts two and three as the Golden Tigers secured a 1-0 lead. However, court one with Ana Gonzalez and Paula Cigarran weathered a 5-2 deficit to comeback and win 7-6 (8-6 tie breaker). Although it did matter in terms of overall score, it gave the Mariners some momentum heading into singles play.

Coach Rogers noted that doubles comeback as being a big boost for his team.

"Even though we lost the doubles point, it was a big turning point to have Paula (Cigarran) and Ana (Gonzalez) on court one fight back from a big deficit with the other two teams watching and take that first line," said Rogers.

"I feel like we carried that fighting spirit and momentum into singles play," Rogers continued.

On court six, Azul Malatini improved to 5-0 on the year after making quick work of her opponent with wins of 6-0 and 6-1.

Gonzalez did the same on court one, winning 6-0, 6-1 to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead in the match.

Freshmen Cigarran and Danielle Silvan clinched the match with wins on courts three and four. Silvan won 6-3, 6-1 before Cigarran sealed the victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win over her opponent.

Chloe Do Lago came back after dropping the first set 6-0 to win the second set 6-3 and force a third set tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Do Lago would drop the match 10-3. Lisa McKenzie lost a hard-fought match on court two, 6-3, 6-3 but was the vocal leader for much of the match, rooting her teammates on as she battled.

Both teams came into the match receiving votes and looking for a signature win to help improve their ranking in the polls. With this win and win over Morningside, who also received votes, the Mariners have positioned themselves well.

"Big win for the girls today," said Rogers. "I think we took a big step forward, not only in how we are playing, but also in the national scene."

UP NEXT: The Mariners will face Georgetown College on Wednesday, Mar. 15 in Hilton Head, S.C.
