(RV) Mariners Off to Best Start in Program History

HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The (RV) Coastal Georgia women's tennis team (5-1, 0-1) defeated the Georgetown Tigers (2-5) by a score of 7-0 on Wednesday evening to close out non-conference play.

Newcomer Sofia Gonzalez saw her first action as a Mariner and capitalized on the opportunity with a 6-4, 6-0 win at line No. 6.

Ana Gonzalez and Paula Cigarran held down the top of the lineup with a win in doubles at court No. 1 and then wins in their singles matches at lines No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Sofia Gonzalez and Lisa McKenzie secured the doubles point for the Mariners with a 6-3 win on court No. 3.

Chloe Do Lago and Azul Malatini fell at court No. 2 7-5 in their first match as doubles partners.

Malatini improved to 6-0 on the year after recording a win at line No. 4. This is the first time all season that Malatini has played a court other No. 6, her impressive start to the season might make her climb a more common occurrence.

McKenzie and Do Lago handled their opponents as well, winning at courts No. 3 and 5, respectively, by scores of 6-2, 6-4 and 6-1, 6-1.

The Mariners are off to their best start in program history in terms of record. This win also marks the fifth consecutive victory for the Mariners, a streak they have not had since they did it back in the 2014 season.

The Mariners have already defeated two teams receiving votes, and with the strong conference schedule coming up, they will have opportunities to improve their national standing.

UP NEXT: The Mariners will host Ave Maria on Friday, Mar. 24 at the Marta B. Torrey Tennis Complex to start Sun Conference play.
