No. 21 Mariners Split Doubleheader With No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The No. 21 Coastal Georgia softball team (28-8, 7-3) split its doubleheader with No. 10 Georgia Gwinnett (31-8, 5-1) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Mariners took game one 4-2 and the Grizzles took game two 4-0.

Game one for the Mariners was all about the long ball on offense and Hayley Dickerson pitched a gem as usual, going seven innings and allowing just two runs while striking out nine.

In game two, the Grizzlies' Annalise Wood was dialed in, striking out 16 and allowing just two hits.

GAME 1:
  • The Mariners got things started in the second inning with a two-run homer by Kayla Rowell after Julianna Bellflower drew a walk.
  • The Grizzlies went three-up-three-down in the first three innings before finally getting something going in the fourth with a double to lead off the inning.
  • Georgia Gwinnett hit another double to score its first run of the game and then put together a two-out rally in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.
  • The game was not tied long, however, as Aniston Johnson lined a single into right field which set up Malarie Peacock for a two-run home run to give the Mariners a 4-2 lead and eventual win.
  • Dickerson closed out the sixth and seventh innings allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
GAME 2:
  • Bryce Peacock was able to get out of a couple of jams early in the game as Georgia Gwinnett stranded five runners in the first three innings before finally breaking the ice and getting a run in the top of the fourth.
  • The Grizzlies tacked on one more run in the fifth and two more in the sixth for some insurance but did not need it as Wood shutdown the Mariner's offense as she has been doing to teams all season.
UP NEXT: The Mariners will host (RV) St. Thomas in a Sun Conference matchup on Saturday, April 15 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and again on Sunday at 12 p.m. (Time's subject to change due to weather).
