BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The No. 21 Coastal Georgia (31-8, 15-3) completed the sweep of (RV) St. Thomas (29-14, 10-8) after winning game two 5-0 and coming back to win game three, 7-5.
Game two was paused in the bottom of the fifth inning yesterday with the Mariners up 1-0 due to a shelter in place and resumed today at 10 a.m.
Zoe Johnston-Hadaway and
Elizabeth McGovern played the heroes in game three. Johnston-Hadaway crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth to give Coastal Georgia its first lead of the game, and eventual win, at 7-5. This was the freshman's first traditional home run, as she hit an inside-the-park homer earlier in the year.
McGovern, who came into the game having pitched just 12.1 innings threw a nearly perfect 3.1 innings against the Bobcats. She allowed just two hits as she picked up her second win of the season and helped the Mariners stay in a game that they struggled in.
Hayley Dickerson, who is usually making a difference in the circle, had three clutch at-bats today to lift the Mariners over St. Thomas.
Bryce Peacock picked up her ninth win of the season (after pitching 5.0 innings of game two), but she and her sister,
Malarie Peacock were not lineup for either game today. Head Coach
Mike Minick had to get creative with his lineups and it ended up working out in his favor.
GAME 2:
- The Mariners came out swinging Sunday morning.
- Sarah Thinger started off the game with a single back to the pitcher which was followed by a Julianna Bellflower single to put runners on first and second.
- Hayley Dickerson, who was called upon to finish game two, stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run bomb to give the Mariners a 4-0 lead. Dickerson, usually just a pitcher, made the most of her opportunities at the plate today.
- MacKenzie Kagee got in on the action as well, hitting a homer right after Dickerson, to make it a 5-0 game. Kagee's home run cleared the wall in centerfield by a lot as she hit a moonshot.
- Dickerson was able to shut down any chance of a Bobcats comeback in the sixth and seventh to secure the win and pick up her first save of the season.
GAME 3:
- The Bobcats were out for revenge in the final game of the series, putting up four runs (all unearned) in the first inning after an error in right field extended the inning.
- The Mariner's were not able to answer back until the third inning when Dickerson again made her impact felt at the plate hitting a double down the line to score Thinger.
- Johnston-Hadaway drove in the second Mariner's run on a single to left field that allowed Bellflower to cross home plate.
- McGovern pitched a gem through 3.1 innings to keep the Bobcats lead at 5-2 before the Mariners got their bats going in the sixth inning.
- Despite four errors, the Mariners were in striking distance the whole game thanks to McGovern's outing. Rori Rhodes led things off in the bottom of the sixth with a hard-hit single through the right side.
- Thinger followed that up with a beautiful bunt that she reached safely on and then Bellflower drove in Rhodes with a single down the left field line.
- Dickerson singled into center to load the bases for Kagee who reached on an error after the right fielder dropped the ball and gave Coastal Georgia new life.
- With two outs and runners on the corners in a 5-4 game, Zoe Johnston-Hadaway entered the right side of the batter's box already with two hits and an RBI to her name.
- Johnston-Hadaway decided she wanted to make today even more memorable for herself as she crushed a three-run homer over the left field fence to give Coastal Georgia a 7-5 lead, and eventual win.
- The freshman was hitting sub .200 entering the day but after a 3-for-4 performance at the plate is up to .220. Her first home run of the season was an inside-the-park homer against Columbia International, which was also her first multi-hit game. Johnston-Hadaway is having a nice freshman campaign with today being the highlight.
UP NEXT: The Mariners will host No. 11 Middle Georgia St. on Tuesday in a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m.
