Volleyball Starts Season With 3-0 Win

MILLIGAN, Tenn.- Coastal Georgia's heavy hitters were in full swing to start the season as they pushed the Mariners to a 3-0 victory against Milligan University (0-1) on Friday evening on day one of the Milligan Mountain Madness Tournament.

The Mariners (1-0) had production from a lot of different cast members but Raevyn Russell and Sydney Martin stole the show as they recorded 12 kills while hitting .259 and 11 kills while hitting .375, respectively, for the match.

Setters Rebecca Brown and Sara Hansen were pinpointing the ball all match as Brown racked up 20 assists, which included assist No. 1,000 in a Coastal uniform. Hansen added 16 assists of her own en route to a double-double as she recorded 10 digs as well.

Chantiya Johnson picked up right where she left off last season as she smacked four of the Mariners eight blocks to go along with her three kills.

Cassidy Casey and Paula Perez Rosales combined for 14 kills while Elena Gkiourda recorded an efficient three kills on just nine attempts.

Julia Neveu and Skylar Gribben held down the back line as the Buffaloes hit just .144 for the match.

Freshman Luci Marinella recorded her first collegiate action which was highlighted by an ace in the third set to put Coastal Georgia up 17-15.

Coaches' Corner (Val Every):

"I am extremely pleased with the win today. We worked as a unit to execute our system and our game plan and we did that well."

"Rebecca (Brown)'s 1,000 assist was just the cherry on top of the great win. We are looking forward to our next game against Georgetown and the rest of this weekend as we continue to improve early in the season."

"We had had awesome attacking from Raevyn (Russell) and Sydney (Martin) which was key in our game plan."

UP NEXT: The Mariners will be back in action at 7:30 tonight to take on Georgetown College.
