Coastal Georgia Comes Up Short Against Seahawks

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia volleyball team (4-7, 1-3) lost in its Saturday match against Keiser University 3-1 despite making things interesting down the stretch.

The Mariners, again, played until the last point and were in the match the whole time but were unable to close it out.

Keiser (18-6, 2-1) opened up an early 2-0 lead against the Mariners and after a dominant 25-17 second set win, looked poised to sweep Coastal Georgia.

Coastal Georgia turned the tables on the Seahawks in the third set, winning 25-17 as they hit .257 percent and held Keiser's hitting percentage to just .091.

The Mariners looked like they were en route to a reverse sweep when they tied the fourth set at 24-24 after being down 24-21 before Keiser rattled off two-straight points to escape with a victory.

BY THE NUMBERS-
  • The Mariners recorded 14 blocks against the Seahawks, headed by Chantiya Johnson's seven and Cassidy Casey's five.
  • Johnson got it done on the offensive end too, hitting an otherworldly .818 percent and tying the team lead with nine kills.
  • Casey, like Johnson, ended the match with nine kills as did Elena Gkiourda. Gkirouda also got in three blocks and hit an impressive .304 percent.
  • Raevyn Russell added eight kills while Sydney Martin hammered down six of her own to complete the major scorers for Coastal.
  • Kira Matthias had three serving aces through just two sets, which was a game-high.
  • The setting trio of Rebecca Brown, Sara Hansen and Luci Marinella combined for 36 assists while libero's Julia Neveu and Skylar Gribben combined for six of their own.
  • Gribben recorded another double-digit dig match with 12 while Jenna Rogers tacked on nine of her own.

COACHES CORNER- Val Every
"Chan Johnson was an absolute beast today. She has been working incredible hard in practice and it has showed in the last couple of games. Johnson was excellent and deserves the spotlight for her performance. I am also incredibly proud of Elena (Gkiourda) as she stepped up on the outside with her hitting and on serve receive. Our block was great today as well. Cassidy (Casey) always comes up with timely blocks and kills and today was no exception."

UP NEXT: The Mariners will play its last non-conference game of the season as they host LaGrange College on Wednesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
