Story Links

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team secured their third straight win and second straight conference win in a 91-81 thriller over the Southeastern Fire on Wednesday night inside Howard Coffin Gym.

For the first eight minutes of the first half, the Mariners (3-3, 2-0 SUN) controlled the basketball game, outscoring the Fire (2-4, 1-1 SUN) 27-12 en route to one of their largest leads of the season. Salle Wilson scored the first four points for CCGA followed by a Valdy Zephir tip-in layup to put the Mariners up 6-2. Wilson and Zaphir continued to pace the Mariners offense until Kaden McArthur joined the scoring party with a layup to put the Mariners up 13-4. After that point, Wilson went on a personal 8-0 run until the media timeout, going 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the three point line as the Mariners led 21-6 at the first media timeout.

CCGA continued to extend their lead even further, using baskets from the likes of Thaddeus Burns, David Felix, and free throws from Jeremiah Camara, as the Mariners led by as many as 18 at one point in the first half.

The Fire did not lay down and quit, however, as they continued to apply pressure with made baskets, but the Mariners kept pace and shot just as well from the field as the Mariners took a 16 point lead into the break, their largest halftime lead of the season to date.

Wilson and McArthur both finished the half with 16 points each, both combining to go 11-15 from the floor and 3-4 from deep in the half. Zephir followed behind with 10 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting from the floor.

The Mariners shot an unprecedented 58 percent from the floor and 63 percent from three in the half, compared to 38 percent from the floor and 35 percent from three from Southeastern.

Coming out of the half, the Mariners drew first blood in the form of a 10-3 run, getting four points from D'ontaye Strawter. CCGA continued to score, but the Fire kept the game close enough, and with just under nine minutes to go in the game, Southeastern had cut the lead down to 12.

With six and a half minutes to go and CCGA up 10, the Mariners regained their offensive fire and sparked a 9-4 run, fueled by five points from Wilson and CCGA went right back up by 15 points with 3:45 in the game.

Southeastern immediately responded with an 11-2 run of their own over the next two minutes of game time as the Mariners lead was cut down to eight with 90 seconds left in the game.

Eight points was as low as the Mariners lead became, however, as CCGA won the free throw game down the stretch and took their second straight Sun Conference victory by a final score of 91-81.

McArthur and Wilson both scored 27 points each, a new career high for Wilson. Zephir was one rebound shy of his second straight double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds. As a team, CCGA finished shooting 52 percent from the field, a new season high, and 41 percent from three.

Sitting at 2-0 in conference play, the Mariners will now turn their focus to the Ave Maria Gyrenes, the only other 2-0 team in conference play. Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
