Men's Basketball Falls to Falcons in Road Contest

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. - It was another night of poor shooting for the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team as they dropped their Monday night contest with the Florida College Falcons by a final of 72-58 in Conn Gymnasium.

After taking the early lead on Jeremiah Camara's jumper to begin the game, the Mariners (0-2) immediately surrendered an 11-2 run to the Falcons (2-3) which saw them take an 11-4 lead with just over 15 minutes left in the first half. Later in the quarter, the Mariners cut the deficit to four thanks to a Valdy Zephir jumper and two free throws from Thad Burns, but the Falcons immediately went on a 4-0 run of their own to push the lead back to eight with nine minutes to play in the half. Salle Wilson and Camara continued to score to keep the Mariners close, and with just 54 seconds left in the half, the Mariners tied the game once again on a Kaden McArthur three pointer, knotting the game up at 27 a piece. Chase Hettinger then hit a three followed by another McArthur bucket, and the Falcons took a one point lead into the locker room, leading 30-29.

McArthur led the way at the break with nine points with Camara following closely behind with six. The other five Mariners that scored combined for just 14 points, the same total as McArthur and Camara. Nate Duda led the Falcons in scoring at the break with nine.

Both teams traded baskets well into the second quarter, but a jumper from Wilson cut the lead down to three with 14:08 left in the game, giving the Mariners some life. Just a minute later, Zephir brought the lead down to two with a basket of his own, but the Mariners could never get a key stop to potentially tie the game or even take the lead. The Falcons got the lead back up to seven with eight minutes to play, and the lead never dropped below five points for the remainder of the contest, securing the 72-58 victory for the Falcons on their home floor.

McArthur finished the game as the leading scorer for the Mariners with 16 points on 7-14 shooting for the night, while Zaphir added 12 and Wilson dropped in 10. Wilson also led the Mariners with seven rebounds and four assists.

The Mariners shot just 2-19 from behind the three point line in the effort, with both makes coming from McArthur. CCGA also shot just 35 percent from the field to go along with their 11 percent from three. Florida College finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field and 28 percent from three for their second win of the season.

The Mariners are back in action on Wednesday for their home opener against the Knights of Middle Georgia State. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
