Mariners Drop Monday Contest with Lady Barons

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. - 29 personal fouls and 24 turnovers were the story for the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team as they dropped their Monday night contest with the Brewton-Parker Lady Barons by a final of 59-45.

It was a lightning quick start for the Mariners (1-1) as they blitzed the Lady Barons (2-1) to the tune of a 10-2 run at the halfway point of the first quarter. Peyton Schafer got the scoring started with a layup to start the game, which Tyler Butler followed with a layup of her own to make the score 4-1. After another 1-2 trip from the charity stripe for BPC, Shafer put two more in the basket on a trip to the free throw line. The freshman added her second bucket and sixth point of the first quarter with another layup, and Gracie Herron ended the run with a layup with 5:19 left in the quarter to cap the 10-2 run. Cori Keats ended the run with a three for Brewton-Parker, and the Lady Barons slowly climbed back into the game. Brewton-Parker closed the gap all the way with 1:35 left in the quarter with a pair of free throws, but Morgon Webb put a jumper through to put the Mariners on top, as she scored the final five points of the quarter to send the game to the second with CCGA in front 15-10.

Brewton-Parker came out on a 4-0 run over the first three minutes of the second quarter, but Webb connected on a layup which turned into a successful three point play to put CCGA back up four. Later in the quarter, Alli Stone and Webb went back-to-back from the three point line to give the Mariners their largest lead of the night at 10. Out of the timeout, the Lady Barons closed the second quarter on a 13-7 run over the final five minutes to close the Mariners lead down to one, and CCGA took a 28-27 lead into the locker room.

Webb led the way for the Mariners with 13 points on 4-9 shooting and 1-2 shooting from behind the arc. Shafer added eight points of her own, including five rebounds, one block, and two steals. The Barons got 11 from Destanee Wright with no other Lady Baron having more than three in the quarter. The Lady Barons shot 25 free throws in the first half compared to just 11 for the Mariners.

In the third, it was all Lady Barons as they controlled the quarter from start to finish, out scoring the Mariners 23-12 while shooting 42 percent from the field. CCGA went just 4-17 from the field in the quarter with two of their four field goals coming from behind the three point line. The Mariners got the game back tied after the Lady Barons took the lead to begin the third with 7:18 to go in the quarter, but Brewton-Parker responded with an 11-2 run over the next five minutes of game time, ballooning the lead to 45-36. Shafer added a three to end the run and cut the lead to six, but Brewton-Parker once again went on a massive run to end the quarter, out scoring CCGA 5-1 over the last two minutes to take a 50-40 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

It was a defensive struggle in the fourth as both teams combined for just 14 points in the half, with only five going to the Mariners. Both sides shot a combined 3-21 from the field and 0-5 from three point range as the Lady Barons held on for the 59-45 victory over the Mariners.

Webb led the way with 19 points on 5-16 shooting, adding six rebounds and two steals to her tally. The Mariners got 11 points, eight rebounds, and four steals from Shafer, while no one else scored more than five for CCGA. The Lady Barons got 20 points from Wright, 11 from Degale, and 10 from Stewart.

The Mariners turned the ball over 24 times and committed 29 fouls, leading to 43 free throw attempts for Brewton-Parker.

CCGA returns home for their home opener on Wednesday, November 6, when they host the Knights of Middle Georgia State. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m. from Coffin Gym.
