BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Fueled by a new season high in points scored and a new career high from a freshman guard, the College of Coastal Georgia ended their 2024 home schedule with a win over the ABAC Fillies on Saturday afternoon, winning by a final of 82-39 inside Howard Coffin Gym.
Neither side built a lead larger than four points in the first quarter which came at the 6:50 mark when the Fillies (5-7, 0-2 SSAC) took a 9-5 lead on a layup from Brianna Wimberly. Jasmin Worsley and Tyler Butler kept the Mariners (6-4, 0-3 SUN) in the basketball game as the defense settled in, and Peyton Shafer's layup with 2:47 left in the quarter gave the Mariners the lead right back at 12-11. Wimberly poured in another three which was answered by Taylor Gardner, but Malaja Dyous layed the ball in to end the quarter and give the Fillies a 16-14 lead going into the second quarter.
Both sides were led by their Freshmen as Wimberly finished the quarter with 10 while Shafer finished with seven for the Mariners.
Maylei Noreika tied the game out of the quarter break as the Mariners never looked back in the quarter. ABAC was held scoreless for the first seven and a half minutes of the second quarter as CCGA won the quarter 24-9.
Alli Stone kept the momentum going with four straight points followed by a layup from Butler to give CCGA a six point lead. Bre Fowler entered the game and went 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from three for eight points off the bench, as the senior from Berthoud, Colo. drilled a three right at the buzzer to send the Mariners into the locker room with a 13 point lead at 38-25.
Shafer led the Mariners at the break with 11 points followed by Fowler with eight and Butler with six. Butler also finished the half with eight rebounds, knocking on the door of her second double-double of the season.
CCGA once again dominated the third quarter allowing the Fillies to score just eight points and held them to 1-11 shooting from the floor in the quarter. The Mariners won the quarter 23-8 using nine points from Morgon Webb as the senior made three three pointers in the quarter as CCGA led the game 61-33 after three quarters.
The fourth was just as dominant as the previous two quarters as ABAC scored just six points in the final frame compared to 21 from the Mariners as CCGA cruised to an 82-39 victory over ABAC in their final home game of 2024.
Stone finished with a new career high 16 points and eight rebounds while Butler secured her second double-double of the season with her 10 point, 11 rebound effort. Wimberly finished with 10 for the Fillies as no other Fillie scored higher than seven.
CCGA shot 52 percent from the field in the winning effort, sending them into 2025 with a 7-4 record.
The Mariners will finish their 2024 slate of games with an exhibition with North Florida on Monday. Tip off id set for 1 p.m.
