Mariners Drop Saturday Road Contest with Stallions

TIFTON, Ga. - In their first meeting between the two schools, the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team dropped their Saturday afternoon contest with the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Stallions by a final of 70-62 in Tifton.

The Stallions (3-4, 1-1 SSAC) jumped right out to a 9-4 lead over the first six minutes of the first half, but a pair of free throws from Kaden McArthur and layups from Salle Wilson and Jeremiah Camara for the Mariners (4-4, 2-1 SUN) as they cut the lead down to just one with 12:10 left to play in the half. Thaddeus Burns capped the short and quick 8-2 run for CCGA with a layup to give the Mariners their first lead of the contest at 12-11.

ABAC took the lead right back and proceeded to mount an effective 9-0 run over three minutes of game time to take an eight point lead into the second half of the first half. The Stallions extended that lead up to as much as 11 before a D'Andre Jefferson three pointer cut the lead back to single digits. Tommie Hall extended the lead to 12 with a layup, but Camara added a jumper with 1:16 on the clock to get the lead back down to 10 as neither side scored in the final minute as the Fillies took their 34-24 lead into the locker room.

McArthur and Camara combined for 15 of the Mariners 24 points and both shot 50 percent from the field in the half. The other five Mariners who scored in the half combined to score just nine points on just four made baskets.

After losing their double digit lead, ABAC got the lead back up over 10 with a layup from Nate Mobley as their lead did not drop below 10 again until the five minute mark when McArthur buried a jumper to make the score 57-48.  That jumper from McArthur sparked a quick 8-2 run for the Mariners, with five of the points coming from the sophomore from Suwanee. Wilson ended the run with a three pointer from the top of the key, as CCGA cut the lead down to five at 59-54. Five was as low as the lead ever got for the Mariners as the Stallions ended the game by outsourcing CCGA 11-8 to take a 70-62 victory.

McArthur led the Mariners with 20 points, his fourth 20 point game of the season. Camara and Wilson both followed with 13 points each. Camara finished with a double-double grabbing 12 rebounds, while Wilson finished two rebounds shy of one of his own.

CCGA will now take a week off as they prepare to host the Coach Cox Memorial Tournament next Friday and Saturday. The Mariners will play Brewton-Parker on Friday at 7:00 p.m. followed by the same Stallions team on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
