Mariners Stunned by Late Basket From Royals

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Despite a big third quarter, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to the Warner Royals, losing 76-75 on a last second layup.

The Royals (10-15, 5-8 TSC) got out to an early 7-3 lead through the first 90 seconds, but back to back layups by Andranique Voorhies, the latter being an and one, gave the Mariners (7-18, 1-12 TSC) their first lead of the contest at the 7:57 mark in the first quarter. Both teams continued to play back and forth until the 4:34 mark when Warner went on an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 22-14 lead, with a jumper by Iesha Rhodin stopping the run, sending us to the second quarter with the Royals leading by eight, 24-16.

Warner continued to keep their distance from the Mariners halfway into the second, but at the 5:54 mark, Coastal went on an 8-4 run over the next two minutes to get the lead back to five. The lead would once again grow for the Royals as they got the lead back up to nine going into the break, 42-33.

The slow start for the Mariners did not carry over into the third as the offense exploded coming out of the break. Over the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Mariners went on a 19-4 run, starting off with back-to-back threes from Morgon Webb and D'Auzhanay Harden. Voorhies added a pair of layups during the run as well, and Rhodin added a  jumper of her own. The Mariners outscored the Royals 27-10 during the third quarter, with four of their 10 points coming from the free throw line. CCGA shot 50 percent from the field during the quarter and 38 percent from behind the arc, and took a 60-52 lead into the fourth and final quarter.

Sonia Forney got the scoring started for CCGA in the fourth with a made jumper, in what turned out to be a defensive struggle in the first half of the quarter. For almost four minutes of game time, the only baskets made either way were via the charity stripe, until Voorhies broke the streak with a layup with 3:28 left and CCGA clinging to a 66-58 lead. The Mariners continued to hold strong, holding a 71-66 lead with just 90 seconds remaining in the game. With time winding down, Warner made their move. A big three pointer by Dianis Hurtado cut the CCGA lead to two, and after Harden went 1-2 from the line, Hurtado went the other way and got fouled, making both of her shots to cut the lead to one with just six seconds remaining. Harden once again went to the line to ice the game, but came away empty handed leaving the door open for the Royals. After grabbing the defensive rebound, Kalyah Watson went coast to coast and laid the ball in with just two seconds left, giving the Royals the lead 76-75, which would be the final score.

Rhodes led the way offensively for CCGA, scoring 18 points while shooting 60 percent from three. Voorhies finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds, while Harden added 15 points and Forney dropped in 13. As a team, the Mariners shot just 38 percent from the field and 24 percent from three.

The Mariners will return home this weekend for the final game of the regular season, hosting Ave Maria University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. from Brunswick.
