Brunswick, Ga- Both women's and men's basketball teams faced off against Webber International at home on Wednesday afternoon. After being defeated on the road at Webber, both teams were eager to securing a win over both Warrior teams at home. The hunger to win was displayed greatly by the Mariner basketball teams as they both took their games into overtime. Many obstacles were in front of Coastal to overcome from key players fouling out, turnovers, and calls hard to accept. Despite their intensified play and efforts, neither team was able to take a win.
WOMEN'S:
The Lady Mariners came out into this competition looking completely different in terms of their style of play. The Mariners' fluent execution and constant ball movement led to many great looks around the perimeter as well as in the paint. Going into quarter 2, Coastal led by 3 with a score of 21-18. The Warriors then took over the second half to gain a 34-33 lead going into halftime. It was not until midway into the 3rd quarter that Webber took the largest lead of the game, placing the Mariners in a 13 point deficit at 38-51. No pressure to the Mariners as they actually appeared to be very comfortable during this competition,
Iesha Rhodin cut the lead back to 10 with a huge three point shot assisted by
Morgon Webb. Coastal went on a 16-0 run in which
Sonia Forney tied the game and cracked the Warrior lead with an and one. The fourth quarter was a game of waves but, both teams competed until the regulation buzzer sounded. At the sound of this Buzzer,
Sonia Forney made a huge lay up to tie the game again and take us into overtime. Webber capitalized on free throws in addition to
Sonia Forney picking up her fifth foul during OT to secure their 89-86 win over Coastal.
BY THE NUMBERS
At 21 points each,
Sonia Forney and
Morgon Webb led the Mariners in scoring.
Iesha Rhodin added 18 points in which her and
Morgon Webb combined for 9 made three pointers.
Sonia Forney and Jasmin Wosley both led in rebounds at 9 each. Forney ended one rebound short from a double-double. Worsley ended one rebound and assist short of a triple-double.
Ja'Khyla Johnson,
D'Auzhanay Harden, and
Brinyia Rolax added the remaining 14 points for Coastal.
MEN'S:
Men's basketball dropped to Webber International with a final score of 85-86. With great strategy, the Mariners held Eden Holt to only 5 points going into halftime after his 35 point performance in the Warriors' previous game versus Keiser. The Warriors were carried by each of their players going into the half who all had atleast 3 points and a rebound which helped give them a 38-34 lead at the half. Coming into the second half, the Warriors took a 10 point lead over the Mariners but, a 10-0 run by the Mariners' Jiles, Giles, Daniels, Wilson, and Veon tied things back up within 3 minutes of play. After back and forth baskets from both teams,
Salle Wilson drained a huge three pointer to tie the game and take us into overtime. Down to the final secound, down by 3, the final posession was in the hands of Coastal. After a missed three point attempt, a put back by Wilson ended the competition with the Mariners falling short by 1.
BY THE NUMBERS
Nick Jiles led in scoring with 20 points. Also adding 5 rebounds and 6 assists.
Salle Wilson added 18 points and 5 rebounds right behind Jiles.
Layton Veon snagged 14 rebounds and added 8 points.
Kaden McArthur put up 17 points with 7 assists.
Jeremiah Camara contributed 8 points along with 5 each from
Aaron Daniels and
Jamill Giles
