BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Bryce Peacock homered three times in two games pacing the offense as the Coastal Georgia Softball team rolled to two wins over the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans, winning 6-2 in game one before winning game two 12-1 in five innings.
The senior from Baxley now has 21 career home runs, a new Coastal Georgia Softball record for home runs in a career.
Game One: CCGA 6, NCF 2
The Mighty Banyans (5-24) got after the Mariners (22-3, 3-0 TSC) and starting pitcher
Bryce Peacock early in the first inning. Keke Waters started the game off with a bunt single, and two batters later, the NCF pitcher Madilyn Dutton launched a home run to dead center field, giving the Mighty Banyan a 2-0 lead going into the bottom half of the inning.
The Mariners responded quickly in their own half of the inning however.
Sarah Thinger got things started by working a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a sac bunt from
Rori Rhodes. Two batters later,
Rylee Mills doubled home Thinger to score the first run of the game for CCGA. Mills did make it to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded and we went to the second with a 2-1 lead for NCF.
After setting down the Mighty Banyans in the top half in order, the Mariners threatened once again in the second.
Alyssa Haggerty got things started with a little help from the NCF infield, reaching on an error by the second baseman. After stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch,
Zoe Johnston-Hadaway drew a walk and stole second herself, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. Back-to-back groundouts to the pitcher ended the threat, and sent us to the third with the same score.
With two outs in the top of the third, the Mighty Banyans loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and a walk, but Peacock got the next batter to pop out, ending the threat and keeping the deficit at one.
The stellar pitching paid off in the bottom half as Rhodes led the inning off with a triple, followed by an RBI single from Peacock herself tying the game. Two batters later,
Mackenzie Southerland doubled off the wall scoring Peacock, giving the Mariners their first lead of the day. CCGA didn't stop there as later in the inning, Hadaway singled into center scoring Southerland for their third and final run of the inning, taking a 4-2 lead into the fourth.
With Peacock now rolling on the mound, the Mariners looked to add on in the bottom of the fifth inning. Southerland began the inning with a leadoff double followed by a
MacKenzie Kagee bunt single with
Courtney Beck stealing second as the pinch runner. With two runners in scoring position and nobody out, the Mariners went down in order with three groundouts to end the inning, keeping the score 4-2 going into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Mariners started out hot once again at the plate, and this time was able to cash in. Thinger began the inning with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and moved to third on a sac bunt from Rhodes. The very next batter, Peacock, blasted a two run home run to center field to extend the Mariners lead to 6-2. The homerun from Peacock was her third of the season and 19th of her career at CCGA, and it sent us to the final frame with the Mariners leading 6-2.
In the seventh, Peacock returned to the mound and finished the game off by retiring the Mighty Banyans in order to secure the 6-2 victory.
Peacock and Mills both finished 2-4 at the plate with the pair combining for four of the six RBI's in the game. Southerland finished 2-3 at the plate with two doubles and an RBI.
Peacock went the full seven innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs in the winning effort, her ninth win of the season.
Game Two: CCGA 12, NCF 1
The Mighty Banyan struck first once again in the first inning of the second game, as their leadoff hitter got a bunt single, stole second, stole third, and came around to score on a single, giving NCF a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Peacock went right back to work in the bottom half of the inning, cashing in a hit by pitch to Thinger and an error allowing Rhodes to score with a three run home run, her second of the day and number 20 of her career and tying her for first in CCGA history for career homeruns. The Mariners didn't stop scoring there, as back-to-back doubles from Southerland and Mills scored another run.
Rily Andrews added a single and later scored on a groundout to make the score 6-1 going into the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Mariners got another run, this time with Rhodes scoring Peacock single into center, making the score 7-1 after two innings.
The Mariners continued to pour it on in the third inning scoring five more times, capped off by another Peacock home run, her 21st of her career, putting her in solo first on the career home runs list in CCGA history. After three innings of play, the Mariners held a comfortable 12-1 lead.
Neither side scored in the fourth, and in the fifth,
Elizabeth McGovern came on to finish the game and retired the Mighty Banyans in order to preserve the 12-1 win for CCGA.
Peacock was the star of game two once again, going 3-3 with a pair of home runs and six RBI's in game two. Rhodes also finished the game 2-3 with a pair of RBI's as well.
Rylee Mills picked up her eighth win of the season, going four innings allowing just five hits and one earned run.
The Mariners are back in action this weekend when they travel to Babson Park, Fla. to take on Webber International for a three game, Sun Conference series. First pitch is currently scheduled for Friday, March 22, at 4 p.m.
