Mariners Hang on to Take Series from Warriors

BABSON PARK, Fla. - The Coastal Georgia softball team secured their second straight Sun Conference series, taking the rubber match with the Warner Warriors by a 5-3 final on Sunday afternoon.

The pitching duel series continued into the rubber match of the series between the Mariners (24-4, 5-1 TSC) and the Warriors (14-17, 2-4 TSC), as both sides combined for just two hits through the first two innings.

Bryce Peacock added a bunt single for the Mariners in the third, but that was the only hit either side could get in the third, as the score remained tied into the fourth.

The Warriors broke through first in the bottom of the fourth, using back-to-back singles followed by a sac fly to score the game's first run.

In the fifth, the Mariners were threatening with back-to-back singles from Julianna Batts and Sarah Thinger, and they broke through to tie the game thanks to their third straight single from Peacock, tying the game at 1-1. The very next batter, Rylee Mills, decided to join the hit party as she singled into center, scoring the second run of the inning for the Mariners and giving them their first lead of the day. Rori Rhodes drew a walk to load the bases, and Rily Andrews got herself an RBI on a foulout, scoring Peacock for their third run of the inning. Mackenzie Southerland was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to load the bases once again, bringing up Zoe Johnston-Hadaway who singled to the outfield scoring a pair, giving the Mariners a 5-1 lead. Emma Jones ended the inning with a groundout to the pitcher, but not before the damage was done with CCGA scoring five runs on five hits in the inning, taking their 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

Now with a four run cushion, starter Elizabeth McGovern went back out for the bottom of the fifth, but immediately surrendered back-to-back singles, forcing head coach Mike Minick to make a change in the circle, turning to Peacock to finish the game. McGovern finished with four innings pitched, allowing three earned runs on five hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Webber would find the scoreboard once again after a sac bunt and two straight singles scored a pair of runs, making the score 5-3. Peacock did settle down and get the next two batters out, preserving the 5-3 lead into the sixth.

The Mariners got a runner to third in the sixth but couldn't cash in, and Peacock shut the Warriors down in the bottom half to send us to the seventh with the Mariners still leading by two.

Rhodes started the seventh with a double off the third base bag for the Mariners and promptly moved to second on a sac bunt from Andrews. As they have for the entire series, the Mariners stranded another pair of runners in the inning, going to the bottom of the seventh leading 5-3 needing just three outs for the series win.

The lack of run support did not end up becoming a factor in the end as Peacock worked around a leadoff single to get the next three outs in order to secure another Sun Conference series win for the Mariners.

Peacock finished 2-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, while Julianna Batts finished 2-3 scoring once as well. Hadaway finished with a pair of RBI's, and Rhodes was 1-2 with a double and two walks.

McGovern picked up her fourth win of the season while Peacock went three innings of solid relief, allowing three hits and no runs in route to her second save of the season.

The Mariners will return to action next weekend when they travel to West Palm Beach, Fla. to take on Keiser. First pitch is set for Friday, March 29, at 1 p.m.
