BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia softball team got back to their winning ways on Friday afternoon, taking both sides of a double header with the Florida Memorial Lions.
Game One - CCGA 3, FMU 2
With one out in the inning, the Lions (18-15, 3-8 TSC) loaded the bases thanks to a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch, putting the pressure on starter
Bryce Peacock right out of the gates. Peacock got the next two batters out in order to strand the bases loaded and give her offense a chance to score first.
The Mariners (27-6, 8-3 TSC) did just that, scoring once in the bottom half. Three walks and a fielder's choice by the first four batters loaded the bases with just one out, and
MacKenzie Kagee put the ball in play forcing an error by the shortstop, bringing home the game's first run. One batter later, the Lions forced a double play, ending the threat and sending the game to the second with a 1-0 lead for CCGA.
Both sides got a runner on in the second but nothing more, and in the third, CCGA struck again. Peacock led the inning off making it to second on two errors by the Lions, and promptly moved to third on a fly out by
Rylee Mills.
Rori Rhodes drove her home to score another run, giving the Mariners a 2-0 lead into the fourth.
After Peacock sat down the Lions in order in the fourth,
Alyssa Haggerty singled to lead off the bottom half, but nothing would come of it as the Mariners held their 2-0 lead into the fifth.
FMU was once again retired in order in the top of the fifth, and in the bottom half, CCGA added on.
Sarah Thinger started the inning with a bunt single and moved all the way to third on another error by the Lions. One batter later, Peacock singled to second and the throw went into the dugout, moving her to second and scoring Thinger. The next three batters were retired in order, as we went to the sixth with a 3-0 lead for the Mariners.
In the bottom of the sixth, Haggerty doubled off the wall to start the inning, but could not find her way home, leaving the game at 3-0 into the seventh.
Florida Memorial waited until the final inning to make their move, and make it they did. A single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs in the inning, and a two RBI single from Taylor got the Lions on the board and put the pressure back on Peacock and the Mariners. Peacock got the next batter to pop out, stranding the tying run on third and securing a 3-2 victory for the Mariners.
Haggerty finished with a 2-3 day at the plate, producing two of the five Mariners hits in the game. Peacock, Rhodes, and Kagee all drove in one run a piece. Peacock went the full seven innings in the circle, allowing five hits, two earned runs, and four walks while striking out seven.
Game Two: CCGA 1 , FMU 0
Florida Memorial started the second game swinging at the plate, as Taylor got the games first hit right back up the middle. Starter
Rylee Mills settled down and got a double play from the next batter, keeping FMU out of the score column and turning th game over to her offense. The Mariners went down in order in the bottom half, sending us to the second with a tie game.
FMU got two more hits in the second, but the runner on second left early on a fly out by Gongora, as the Mariners caught a break and looked to capitalize. Other than a single from Rhodes to lead the inning, CCGA couldn't push a run across, as the game moved to the third still tied at zero.
Rily Andrews got the lone hit of the third for either side in the third, and the game stayed tied into the fourth.
In the fifth, the Mariners finally broke through scoring the one and only run of the contest.
Julianna Batts started the inning off with a single, moved to second on a groundout from
Mackenzie Southerland, and came around to score on an RBI double from Thinger. A groundout from Peacock ended the inning, and the Mariners took their 1-0 lead into the sixth.
In the next two innings, FMU failed to earn a single hit and could not get anyone on base, ending the game and clinching the series for the Mariners.
Rhodes finished game two 2-3 from the plate, and Thinger drove in the game's lone run. Mills pitched a complete game allowing just four hits, no runs, no walks and struck out a pair, giving her her 10th win of the season.
The Mariners and Lions will finish the three game series Saturday morning with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
