Mariners Hold Off Royals in Must Win Rematch

BRUNSWICK, Ga. - A historic night from Preston Crisp and a strong second half from Jeremiah Camara fuelled the College of Coastal Georgia men's basketball team to their first victory since January 4 as they defeated the Warner Royals by a final of 99-91 on Saturday night inside Coffin Gym.

Two straight three pointers allowed the Royals (8-12, 2-7 SUN) to jump out to an early 6-2 lead but the Mariners (7-10, 4-4 SUN) didn't stay down for long as they got four straight points from Kaden McArthur followed by an 11-0 run, nine of which came from Crisp as CCGA took a 20-11 lead eight minutes into the first half. Crisp continued to light up the floor while getting assist from the likes of Valdy Zephir and Salle Wilson as CCGA extended their lead out to as much as 12 with just nine minutes left in the first half. Both sides continued their offensive onslaught, but the Mariners lead never dipped below nine again in the first half as they took a 40-31 lead into the locker room.

Crisp led the Mariners at the break with 15 points on 5-6 shooting from three point range while McArthur followed with seven. As a team, the Mariners were on fire the entire half, shooting 51 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three, holding the Royals to just 37 percent from the floor in the process.

It seemed like the second half was going to be all Mariners as CCGA started the second half on an 18-7 run over the first four minutes of the period, pushing their lead out to 20 with 16:26 left to play in the contest. Warner refused to quit and back down however, as the Royals patience finally paid off with a 9-3 run over just two minutes of game time to bring the Mariners lead down to 12 with just under 11 minutes to play in the game. The middle portion of the half were runs from both teams, but Warner got hot down the stretch as a pair of free throws from Jason Ogbolu brought the lead down to 10 with 4:46 left in the game. While the effort was there for Warner and with the lead down to six, the lead built by CCGA proved to be too much in the end as the Mariners held on in the end for the 99-91 victory on their home floor.

The 99 points scored by the Mariners was their most in a game since their 2023-24 season finale against Ave Maria on February 24, 2024, and their most in a winning effort since they knocked off Florida Memorial by a final of 105-88 back on December 1, 2018.

Crisp led the Mariners with 25 points on 8-11 shooting and 7-8 shooting from the three point line, which ties four other Mariners for fifth all time in school history, while also being one rebound shy of a double-double finishing with nine. Camara, one of the main reasons the Mariners held off the Royals in the second half, did finish with a double-double, scoring 21 points, a new career high, and grabbing 11 rebounds. Wilson finished with 20 points on 7-14 shooting, and McArthur finished with 10 despite missing the majority of the second half.

CCGA will now turn their focus to the Fire of Southeastern as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. on Wednesday night. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
