BRUNSWICK, Ga. - In a must win atmosphere on their home court, the College of Coastal Georgia women's basketball team took care of business against Warner, defeating the Royals by a final of 84-56 inside Howard Coffin Gym on Saturday afternoon.Â
CCGA got a career night from both a senior and a freshman in the blowout win, keeping them alive in the hunt for a berth in the Sun Conference tournament, somewhere they haven't been since the 2018-19 season.Â
Jasmin Worsley and Tyler Butler got the Mariners (10-6, 3-5 SUN) started with a 4-0 run out of the gates, but the Royals (6-13, 2-7 SUN) mounted a 7-2 run right back to take a 7-6 lead halfway through the first quarter. With the Mariners needing a spark on offense, Alli Stone entered the game and went ballistic, scoring 11 of the final 13 points for CCGA in the quarter, giving them a 19-9 lead going into the second period.Â
The Mariners carried the momentum into the first part of the second quarter, getting three straight three pointers, two from Bre Fowler and one from Maylei Noreika to build their lead out to 28-12 just two minutes into the quarter. CCGA outscored Warner 21-13 in the quarter and led at the halftime break 40-22.Â
Stone led the Mariners at the break with 14 points, closing in on another career night, while Morgon Webb and Fowler followed with six each. CCGA ended the quarter shooting just under 40 percent from the field and an even 30 percent from three.
Offensively, CCGA dominated the third quarter just as they had the previous two, holding the Royals to just 11 points in the quarter and just 21 percent shooting from the floor to extend their lead out to more than 20 points. Four of the seven made baskets in the quarter were from three point range, three of which came from the left hand of Fowler, as CCGA took a 59-33 lead into the fourth and final quarter.Â
Warner started the fourth quarter on fire offensively, going on a 7-2 run to begin the quarter, but the Mariners offense woke up and eventually outpaced the Royals in the final period, securing the Mariners third conference win of the season, defeating Warner by a final of 84-56.Â
Four Mariners scored in double figures led by Stone with 26 points, the most any Mariner has scored in a game this season. Fowler followed with 17, a new career high for the senior, Butler finished with 14, and Gardner put in 11. CCGA finished shooting 46 percent from the field and 33 percent from three.Â
Following a much needed win, the Mariners now return to the road as they travel to Lakeland, Fla. for a battle with first place Southeastern on Wednesday. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
