Men's Basketball Stumbles in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - With a tie ballgame at the half, the Mariners could not find enough offense in the second half as they dropped their Saturday night contest with the St Thomas Bobcats by a final of 66-59 in Miami.

Just as their women did, the Bobcats (8-12, 4-7 SUN) jumped out to a quick six point lead over the first five minutes of the first half, but the Mariners (7-11, 4-6 SUN) settled into the ballgame, using a three from Preston Crisp and a 1-2 trip from the free throw line from Valdy Zephir to tie the game back up at 12 with 13:10 left in the half. St Thomas responded with a quick 8-0 run, but a three from Salle Wilson and a layup from Jeremaih Camara right after gave the Mariners no need to panic as the Bobcats lead was trimmed to just one. While the Mariners tied the game three different times in the final 10 minutes of the half, they were never able to grab the lead as a Raylin Grant free throw with 14 seconds left in the half sent the game into halftime with a tie game, 30-30, the first time the Mariners had been tied at the half all season.

Wilson led the way with seven at the break with four assists and three rebounds. Both Crisp and Camara followed with six a piece while Camara had a team leading five rebounds and two steals. As a team, CCGA shot 37 percent from the field and made five of their eight three point attempts in the half for a 63 percent clip.

For the first six minutes of the second half, the Mariners carried every single drop of momentum, getting out to a nine point lead after starting the half on a 14-5 run, getting five points from Wilson and Crisp with four from Camara. As soon as the clock ran under 15 minutes to play in the game, St Thomas turned on the pressure, immediately mounting a 11-4 run to retie the game at 46 a piece with 9:53 to play in the game.  Over the final nine minutes, the Bobcats held serve and outcored the Mariners 20-13 to take the game by a final of 66-59.

Camara led the Mariners with 15 points on 4-6 shooting from the field and 7-10 shooting from the free throw line. Crisp added 14 of his own and Wilson finished with 13 points. The Mariners finished shooting 35 percent from the field and 39 percent from three compared to 44 percent from the field for the Bobcats.

The Mariners will now return home on Wednesday as they host the Gyrenes of Ave Maria. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. from Coffin Gym.
