Mariners Sweep Tuesday DH With Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. - It was a DH sweep for the College of Coastal Georgia softball team as they defeated the Savannah State Tigers by a final of 8-2 in game one before winning game two by a final of 9-1.

GAME ONE: CCGA 8, SSU 2

After the Mariners (10-3) went out 1-2-3 in the first inning, the Tigers (3-5) struck quickly in the first inning, using a mental error from CCGA to score two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead into the second.

Whatever was said at the end of the first inning by head coach Mike Minick stuck with the Mariners going into the second as CCGA struck for four runs in the inning. Rily Andrews started the inning with a single to center and advanced to third as McKenzie Collins reached on an error to put runners at the corners with nobody out. Mackenzie Southerland walked to load the bases and two batters later, Avery Callaway brought home the first run for CCGA with a fielder's choice that got the runner out at third but allowed Collins to score. Another error allowed Emma Jones to reach and steal second while Rylie Smith scored, and Kaitlyn Carolino ended the inning with a two RBI triple as CCGA took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second. SSU got two on in the second, but could not score as the Mariners took their lead into the third.

Three straight walks from the Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the third, and Southerland cashed in the opportunity with a groundout to the right side to add on to the lead and make it 5-2. Another walk to Smith re-loaded the bases, and Callaway added another run for CCGA with a single to score Andrews and make the score 6-2. Another error from Savannah State allowed the third run of the inning to score, making the score 7-2, going into the bottom of the third.

With Mills keeping the Tigers at bay, CCGA added onto their lead in the fifth, adding one more to their total. Smith started the inning with a double and came around to score on a pair of groundouts to make the score 8-2.

Perdue took over on the mound in the sixth and fired two scoreless innings for the Mariners in relief, and despite the offense going cold, the Mariners were able to hang on and secure their first win of the day by a final of 8-2.

Andrews finished the game 2-3 from the plate with a run scored and a walk, while Carolino, Callaway, and Jones all recorded 2+ RBI's on the afternoon.

GAME TWO: CCGA 9, SSU 1

Leading off the second game, Perdue doubled to right center to get things started for the Mariners, coming around to score on two straight groundouts to make the score 1-0 early for new pitcher Emilia Clemons.

The Tigers responded with one run of their own in the bottom of the second inning after using an error, a single, and two walks to push home their first run of the game. Clemons managed to make it out of the inning with no further damage as the game went into the third tied at one.

Maddy Lee singled to begin the third and came around to score just two batters later on a Collins double to help the Mariners retake the lead. One batter later, Mills recorded a double of her own to give the Mariners another run in the inning. Andrews followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out, and Southerland followed with an RBI double to score Mills for another run. Though the Mariners loaded the bases again, a fielder's choice ended the inning, but Clemons worked around a leadoff hit by pitch in the bottom half to move the game to the fourth with CCGA leading 4-1.

Moving to the sixth, the Mariners were able to add another run to their lead. Alyssa Haggerty led the inning off with a single, stole second, and came around to score on a groundout by Lee to make the score 5-1 in favor of CCGA.

In the seventh, three straight Mariners reached, two via the free pass, setting the table for Ella Romano who brought home Mills for the sixth run of the game for CCGA. The Mariners weren't done scoring in the inning as Zoe Johnston-Hadaway singled to right field with two outs to score a pair and put the Mariners up 8-1. Callaway brought home the fourth and final run of the inning, getting some help from an error from the left fielder as she brought home Johnston-Hadaway to make the score 9-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. Collins put the Tigers away in order in the bottom half for the Mariners first DH sweep of the season.

Mills finished game two 2-4 from the plate with two RBI, with Johnston-Hadaway finishing with a pair of RBI's as well. In the circle, Clemons picked up win number four on the season, firing five innings allowing three hits, one run, three walks, and six strikeouts. Collins pitched well as well, throwing two scoreless innings in relief.

CCGA returns on Friday for their home opener in Brunswick. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
