BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia softball team completed their opening home weekend with another sweep, this time of Truett-McConnell, as they took both ends of the Saturday double header with the Bears.
GAME ONE: CCGA 8, Truett-McConnell 0 (6 Innings)
After having a great performance yesterday, starter Rylee Mills went right to work shutting down the Bears (7-5) offense as she worked around a two out hit for her first of six scoreless innings on the day. In the bottom half, Brooke Perdue was hit by a pitch as the first batter for the Mariners (14-3), stole second, and went to third on a sac bunt from McKenzie Collins. Mills drew a walk to put runners on the corners, but a strikeout and a flyout ended the threat in the first as the game moved to the second still tied at zero.
Both sides were retired in order in the second and got runners to second in the third, but no noise was made in the game until the fourth inning. With Mills continuing to roll in the circle, the Mariners finally got some run support for the sophomore in the bottom of the fourth. Avery Callaway and Alyssa Haggerty went back-to-back with one out singles followed by an error from the Bears defense which loaded the bases with just one out. Another throwing error from TMU scored the first run of the game in the form of Callaway while Perdue and Collins followed with back-to-back singles that also scored runs, making the score 3-0 going into the fifth.
Neither side got a runner past first in the fifth, and after another 1-2-3 inning from Mills in the top of the sixth, the Mariners went right back to work offensively to end the game. In the bottom of the sixth, CCGA put up five runs to end the game early, highlighted by a Collins 2 RBI triple in the inning as the Mariners ended game one after six innings. Four Mariners finished with two hits in the game while eight different Mariners scored a run in the contest. Collins also added three of the eight runs batted in for CCGA in the game. Mills picked up her sixth win of the season going six innings allowing four hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out three.
GAME TWO: CCGA 2, Truett-McConnell 0
After ending game one early, the Mariners went right to work in game two scoring in the very first inning. After Emilia Clemons put up a zero in the top half of the inning, CCGA helped her with run support getting an RBI single from Collins that scored Callaway, who doubled earlier in the inning, making the score 1-0 going into the second.
With neither side doing much in the second or third innings, CCGA was able to add another run in the fourth. Rily Andrews singled down the left field line to start the inning and stole second, putting a runner in scoring position early in the inning. A fly out and a strikeout put the inning in jeopardy, Emma Jones singled into right field which brought home Andrews and made the score 2-0. Maddy Lee followed with a walk, but a popup ended the inning and any hope to add on as the game went into the fifth with CCGA still leading.
Clemons threw perfect innings in the fifth and sixth, and needing just three outs in the seventh for another complete game shutout, the freshman worked around a leadoff error to get three outs and the win to secure the double header sweep.
CCGA picked up just four hits on the afternoon in game two, still out hitting the Bears who managed just three hits off Clemons who picked up win number six after firing seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Mariners return to action this week on Thursday as they travel to Viera Beach, Fla. to participate in the Space Coast Games against Goshen and Grand View. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
