COLUMBIA, S.C. - The College of Coastal Georgia softball team finished the Cola Classic Round Robin in grand fashion on Saturday, defeating Brewton-Parker by a final of 2-1 before defeating Columbia International by a final of 4-1 in the afternoon game of the DH.
GAME ONE: CCGA 2, Brewton-Parker 1
After both sides went down in order in the first inning and with Rylee Mills throwing up another zero in the top of the second, the Mariners (5-1) cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom half of the inning. Rily Andrews started the inning with a lead off single and stole second base during the next at-bat. Stuck at second with one out, Mackenzie Southerland followed with a single up the middle to move Andrews to third and put runners on the corners with just one out. Emma Jones was next up and sent a fly ball into left field to score Andrews making the score 1-0. Alyssa Haggerty and Avery Callaway both reached later in the inning to load the bases with two outs, but CCGA could not score any more in the inning as the game went into the third with the Mariners leading 1-0.
Mills gave up her first hit of the game in the top of the third, a one out single, but no damage came from it. Mills also got the offense going in the bottom half with a one out double, but a great diving play ended the inning and the chance for CCGA to add on as the game went into the fourth with the same score.
After the Lady Barons got two of their first three batters on and moved them into scoring position with just one out, Mills once again worked out of a major jam to keep the lead intact and give her offense another chance to get more insurance runs. The Mariners did get a runner on in the inning, but nothing came of it as the game went into the fifth with the score stuck at 1-0.
Mills rolled through the top of the fifth, and in the bottom half, the Mariners were able to add on. Kaitlyn Carolino led off the inning with a hit by pitch and promptly stole second, moving to third on a sac bunt from Brooke Perdue. With a runner at third with one out, Mills once again helped her own cause with an RBI single, making the score 2-0.
In the sixth the Lady Barons finally got on the scoreboard as Mills gave up her first run in a game since her first inning of her first start of the season. BPC started the inning with a lead off single who stole second and advanced to third with another single. With runners on the corners and nobody out, a lineout 6-3 double play from Jones got two quick outs as Mills looked like she was getting out of another jam. It was not to be as a single from Odum drove in the run and cut the lead in half, sending the game to the bottom half with the Mariners leading 2-1. CCGA made no noise offensively in the bottom of the sixth, and sent Mills back out with a one run lead looking for her second win of the weekend needing just three outs.
In the seventh, the Lady Barons made it interesting. The lead off batter reached on a single and was advanced to second with a sac bunt. Mills proved to be too much in the circle, however, as she got the next two batters out to end the game with the Mariners on top 2-1.
Mills and Haggerty both finished 2-3 on the afternoon, with Mills and Jones both recording RBI's. Mills went the full seven innings in the circle, allowing six hits and one run with no walks and five strikeouts.
GAME TWO: CCGA 4, Columbia International 0
The Mariners wasted no time getting a lead for Emilia Clemons, the game two starter, as Carolino drew a lead off walk and stole second, coming around to score on an RBI single off the left field wall from Mills to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Both Andrews and Jones reached on a single and a fielder's choice, but a groundout ended the inning before CCGA could add on as they took their 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first. Clemons breezed through the bottom of the first to send the game into the second with the same score.
In the second, the Mariners got a one out single from Avery Callaway but could not get her across to score, Clemons once again held the Rams in check to send the game to the third with the same score.
In the third, the Mariners were able to get Clemons an insurance run. Mills started the inning with a triple over the first base bag, and one batter later, Andrews doubled off the center field wall to score Mills and make the score 2-0 in favor of CCGA. After Andrews moved to third on a passed ball and Southerland walked, Collins struck out to end the threat in the top half of the inning. Clemons once again shut down the Rams offense in order to move to the fourth with a 2-0 lead for her offense.
In the top of the fourth, the Mariners were able to get another insurance run for Clemons. Using a walk, a fielder's choice, and an error, CCGA loaded the bases with just one out for Mills. Getting the only hit of the inning, Mills singled through the left side to score Haggerty and push the Mariners lead to 3-0. Poised to do more damage in the inning, the Rams got two straight outs with the bases loaded to end the threat and limit the damage to just one. In the bottom half, Clemons fired another 1-2-3 inning to send the game into the fifth with a 3-0 lead for CCGA.
In the fifth, Sutherland began the inning with a double into left center as the Mariners proceeded to load the bases with nobody out. Just as they had done in previous innings, the Mariners failed to score, leaving the bases loaded and the score the same headed to the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom half, CIU finally broke through against Clemons scoring one run in the inning to cut into the Mariners lead as they took a 3-1 lead into the sixth.
Neither side made much noise in the sixth, and in the seventh the Mariners got a big insurance run from the bat of Carolino as they took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the seventh, Collins took over for Clemons in the circle, and worked around a two out error to slam the door and give the Mariners their fourth win of the weekend.
Mills once again led the Mariners, going 3-4 from the plate with a triple and two RBI's while Callaway and Andrews both finished with two hits each in the win.
Clemons picked up win number one in her collegiate career, going five innings allowing two hits and one run with one walk and two strikeouts. Collins pitched the final two innings allowing no runs or hits with one walk and two strikeouts as well.
The Mariners return to action next Friday when they travel to Mount Vernon, Ga to take on Brewton-Parker. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
