BRUNSWICK, Ga. - Needing another conference win for momentum going into the final few series of the season, the College of Coastal Georgia softball team got just that, sweeping the Warner Royals on their home field as they took game three on Saturday by a final of 9-0 in five innings.
The Mariners (29-12, 10-8 SUN) dominated once again in game three of the series with the Royals (9-25, 2-16 SUN), out hitting Warner 10-2 in the final game despite getting at bats in just four innings of work offensively.
CCGA did all of their damage in the first two innings of play, scoring five runs in the first inning followed by four runs in the second inning leading to their first three conference wins at home this season.
All nine batters came to the plate in the bottom of the first inning with five of the nine recording a hit in the inning. Rylee Mills, Rylie Smith, Alyssa Haggerty, and Avery Callaway all drove in runs in the inning, and all five hits in the inning were singles as the Mariners played some small ball and ran the bases well on their way to a 5-0 lead after one inning.
Once again in the second, all nine batters made it to the plate, but this time only two Mariners recorded a hit, but the Royals helped out big time with walks, hit by pitches, and errors, allowing CCGA to score four more times in the inning. The big hit of the inning was a bases clearing, three RBI double into right center for Haggerty as the Mariners took a 9-0 lead into the second.
After getting their leadoff hitter on in the first inning, the Royals did not have another base runner until the fourth inning. Even then, Emilia Clemons stifled any chance of runs coming across, and in the fifth, Brooke Perdue slammed the door as the Mariners took game three and swept the series.
Emma Jones finished game three 3-3 from the plate on the day while Mills went 2-2. Haggerty drove in four runs on the afternoon, a new career high for the senior.
CCGA returns to action this coming weekend as they travel to Sarasota to take on the New College of Florida Mighty Banyan in another three game Sun Conference series on Friday and Saturday.
