BRUNSWICK, Ga. - The College of Coastal Georgia softball team dropped both sides of their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with the No. 9 ranked Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies.
GAME ONE: CCGA 2, GGC 3
Game one of the double header featured a great pitching matchup from the Mariners (31-15, 12-9 SUN) Rylee Mills and the Grizzlies (38-8) Kailynn James.
The Mariners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third for their one and only lead of the afternoon. After Mills worked a 1-2-3 in the top half of the third, Avery Callaway got the bottom half started with a leadoff single. Two batters later, Emma Jones singled as well to move Callaway to second and put two on with one out. Mills joined the singles party to load the bases, and Rily Andrews drew a bases loaded walk to bring home the games first run. The Grizzlies got out of danger with a fielder's choice from Brooke Perdue, but the Mariners held an early 1-0 lead.
GGC answered immediately with a run of their own in the top of the fourth as a leadoff single from Roussel moved to second on a sac bunt and came in to score on another single from Talcott to tie the game at one a piece going into the bottom of the fourth.
Both sides were quiet again until the top of the sixth inning when Gwinnett added on with a pair of runs. Singles from Beaver and Sisk put two runners on the bags, and Jenkins answered with a two RBI single to give GGC a 3-1 lead with the Mariners having just six outs to work with.
After making no noise in the sixth, the Mariners needed two runs to keep the game going in the bottom of the seventh. Callaway once again got things going in the inning with a leadoff single and was followed again by Jones with another single. The two hits forced Gwinnett to move to their ace in the hole, Jarvis, who promptly got Mills to fly out for out number one. Jarvis got Ella Romano to pop up on the infield, but the first baseman had trouble with the fly ball as she dropped it, allowing Callaway to score and cut the deficit to just one. With the tying run at third and the winning run at second, Andrews popped out to end the game and give GGC the game one, 3-2, victory.
Jones, Mills, and Callaway all finished with two hits each in game one while Romano and Andrews drove in the two runs for the Mariners. Mills picked up the loss going six innings allowing eight hits, three runs, no walks, and no strikeouts.
GAME TWO: CCGA 3, GGC 13
The second game of the doubleheader was a far cry from the first as GGC dominated after the fourth inning, outscoring CCGA 10-2 over the final three innings.
Jarvis threw game two of the doubleheader against the Mariners, but did allow some heat as CCGA tagged the righty for three runs on seven hits. Jarvis did, however, pick up her 18th win of the season allowing no walks while striking out seven.
The Grizzlies got three in the first inning thanks to an error from the Mariners and a two run home run from Jenkins as they took an early 3-0 lead before CCGA could even hit.
The Mariners got one run back in the bottom half as Kaitlyn Carolino scored on a wild pitch from Jarvis as GGC led 3-1 going into the second.
The game remained 3-1 going into the fifth inning when Georgia Gwinnett added on in the inning to the tune of six runs on four hits in the inning. Robinson provided the big blow of the inning, a three run home run, which made the score 9-1 going into the bottom of the fifth.
The Mariners were able to respond to keep the game going with two runs in the bottom half thanks to a Carolino double down the line, but she was thrown out at third for the third out as GGC led 9-3 into the sixth.
Over the next two innings, Gwinnett pushed four more runs across to extend their lead to 13-3 which ended up being the final score as GGC swept the doubleheader in Brunswick and moved to 3-0 over CCGA this season.
Carolino and Haggerty both finished with two hits in the second game with Carolino driving in the only two runs for the Mariners in the contest. Collins picked up the loss going four innings allowing five hits, six runs, two walks, and one strikeout.
The Mariners return to action on Friday as they welcome in the Webber International Warriors for their final Sun Conference series of the 2025 season. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
