BRUNSWICK, Ga. - It was a senior day sweep for the College of Coastal Georgia softball team as they downed the Webber International Warriors 2-1 in their final regular season game of the season.
After scoring 19 runs over two games yesterday, the Mariners (34-15, 15-9 SUN) had to scrap game three away from the Warriors (20-30, 10-14 SUN) while being outhit in the process. CCGA got the late help when it mattered most, walking the game off on a throwing error from the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh.
Webber struck first in the second inning with a double from Hudson after two straight singles from Bright and Kohout put two on with no outs. After settling down in her first career start, Brooke Perdue got out of the bases loaded jam with just the one run surrendered.
Helping out their pitcher, the Mariners answered immediately with a run of their own in the second. Rily Andrews started the inning with a leadoff triple to right center, scoring on a wild pitch during the very next at bat to tie the game right back at one going into the third.
Neither side scored again until the Mariners walked the game off in big part to the relief pitching of Emilia Clemons and McKenzie Collins for the Mariners. Clemons fired three innings of two hit relief, while Collins picked up the win after two innings of one hit relief. CCGA pitching only struck out one Warriors batter, relying heavily on their defense to get the job done.
In the bottom of the seventh, Andrews once again got the inning started by reaching on an error and promptly stealing second base to set the table for Mackenzie Southerland. Southerland got the bunt attempt down and the throw was wide of the first base bag, allowing Andrews to scurry home for the game winning run.
Senior Zoe Johnston-Hadaway and Andrews both finished with two hits each with the other Mariners senior Alyssa Haggerty recording the only other hit in the game for CCGA.
CCGA will enter the Sun Conference tournament next week as the number four seed and will turn around and play the same Webber International team in the first round. First pitch is still TBD from Clearwater, Fla.
