MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Despite the offensive prowess yesterday, the College of Coastal Georgia softball bats fell cold in game three of the series with the Florida Memorial Lions as they fell 2-1 attempting a sweep.
Kaitlyn Carolino got things started right away for the Mariners (24-12, 7-8 SUN), launching her first career home run over the left field fence just a few pitches into the ballgame, giving CCGA an early 1-0 advantage. The Mariners went down in order after that, but so did the Lions (13-21, 3-14 SUN) as Emilia Clemons started game three just as her counterparts had the day previous.
After two straight singles from Alyssa Haggerty and Avery Callaway were stranded in the second inning, the Lions finally cracked the scoreboard in the series, striking for a pair of runs on two errors from the Mariners, taking a 2-1 lead into the third.
With the Mariners offense still struggling, Rylee Mills entered the contest to pitch in the circle, and even though she allowed two singles in the third inning, she kept FMU off the board as the game went into the fourth with CCGA still trailing 2-1.
Over the final three innings of the ballgame, the Mariners managed just one hit in the rest of the game, a single from Callaway in the seventh, as FMU dominated in the circle after gaining the lead to hold on and win game three of the series by a final of 2-1.
Callaway finished the game 3-3 from the plate while Carolino drove in the lone run of the game with her home run. Taking over for Clemons, Mills pitched four innings of relief, allowing three hits, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts.
The Mariners return to action on Tuesday as they host the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College Fillies. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
