Mills Tosses Complete-Game Shutout as Coastal Georgia Routs Truett McConnell 8-0

Rylee Mills delivered a masterful complete-game shutout and also contributed at the plate as Coastal Georgia dominated Truett McConnell 8-0 in the opening game of Friday's doubleheader at home.

Mills was in command from the first pitch, scattering just three hits over six innings while walking one and striking out four. The right-hander improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete-game gem, retiring the side in order three times and never allowing Truett McConnell to threaten. Mills was equally impressive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk, showcasing her two-way talents in the dominant performance.

Coastal Georgia broke through in the bottom of the second inning after Truett McConnell squandered an opportunity in the top half. The Bears loaded the bases with one out but couldn't capitalize, leaving three runners stranded. The Mariners made them pay immediately. Mackenzie Southerland drew a leadoff walk and Brooke Perdue reached on a pitcher's error to put two runners on base. McKenzie Collins, batting in place of Julianna Batts, delivered a two-run single to give Coastal Georgia a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish.

The Mariners broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning that showcased their aggressive baserunning and clutch hitting. Perdue reached on an error and stole second before advancing to third on a wild pitch. Ashley Stanley drove her in with an RBI single, then stole second herself before Batts plated her with another RBI single. Kaitlyn Carolino followed with a single to load the bases, and after Emma Jones drew a walk to force in a run, Mills helped her own cause with an RBI single to make it 6-0.

Coastal Georgia added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to complete the rout. In the fifth, Avery Callaway singled and scored on an RBI single by Stanley, who continued her aggressive baserunning by stealing second. In the sixth, Jones walked and scored on a pinch-hit RBI single by Emerson Askew after Carolino was hit by a pitch and stole second.

Collins paced the Mariners' 11-hit attack with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, driving in three runs and stealing two bases. Stanley went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two stolen bases in a dynamic performance. Carolino, Jones, Batts, Callaway, Ella Romano, and Askew each contributed hits for Coastal Georgia, which collected at least one hit in five of the six innings.

The victory gave Coastal Georgia momentum heading into the second game of the doubleheader, with Mills' complete game preserving the bullpen for the nightcap. The shutout marked the Mariners' first of the season and showcased their ability to dominate on both sides of the ball when firing on all cylinders.
