Coastal Georgia erased a two-run deficit with a dramatic three-run seventh inning to defeat Truett McConnell 4-3 in thrilling fashion Friday afternoon at home.
Trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Mariners mounted a stirring comeback that began when Rylee Mills drew a leadoff walk and was replaced by pinch runner Hannah Bailey. Rily Andrews followed with a clutch RBI triple to right-center field, plating Bailey to cut the deficit to 3-2. Andrews wasn't finished making an impact. The speedy outfielder stole home on the next play to tie the game at 3-3, electrifying the home crowd and setting the stage for more heroics.
Mackenzie Southerland drew a walk to keep the rally alive, and after Brooke Perdue popped out, McKenzie Collins and Julianna Batts drew consecutive walks to load the bases. Emerson Askew came through with a clutch pinch-hit single that advanced the runners, though Southerland was thrown out at home trying to score. With the bases still loaded, Kaitlyn Carolino delivered the game-winning walk, forcing home Collins with the winning run and sending the Mariners streaming onto the field in celebration.
While the offense provided late-game heroics, it was starting pitcher Emilia Clemons who kept Coastal Georgia in position to win. The right-hander went the distance, scattering nine hits over seven innings while walking just two and striking out none. Clemons improved to 2-0 on the season with the complete-game victory. "Clemons gave us a chance to win today," said a Coastal Georgia coach. "She pitched seven strong innings and our team never stopped believing."
Truett McConnell got on the board first with single runs in the second and third innings, taking a 2-0 advantage. The Bears extended their lead to 3-1 in the sixth when a run scored on an error, but Coastal Georgia answered immediately. In the bottom of the sixth, Batts singled and stole second before Carolino drove her in with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-2 and set up the dramatic finish.
Carolino paced Coastal Georgia's eight-hit attack, going 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a walk while also stealing a base. Andrews finished 1-for-2 with a triple, an RBI, a stolen base, and two walks in a dynamic performance. Batts (1-for-3, walk, stolen base) and Emma Jones (1-for-4) also contributed hits for the Mariners. For Truett McConnell, the offense produced nine hits but couldn't hold the lead.
The victory showcased Coastal Georgia's resilience and ability to compete in late-game situations. The Mariners will look to build on this momentum in their next outing, while Truett McConnell will aim to regroup after letting a late lead slip away.
