COLUMBUS, Ga. — The College of Coastal Georgia ran into a tough Cumberlands squad Saturday evening at the NFCA Leadoff Classic, falling 8-1 at South Commons Complex. The Patriots played a clean, complete game on both sides of the ball, and on this particular night, they simply had too much firepower for the Mariners to overcome.
Cumberlands pitcher J. Cord deserves significant credit for the outcome, as she delivered one of the more dominant individual performances the Mariners have seen all season. Cord worked all seven innings, striking out eight and allowing just one earned run on five hits while keeping CCGA's potent lineup off balance throughout. On most nights, holding a Coastal Georgia offense of this caliber to one run is a significant accomplishment, and Cord was simply at her best.
The Patriots backed their ace with a productive offensive performance, with A. Garcia leading the way by going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. G. Ross provided the biggest blow of the evening with a two-run home run in the fourth inning, and E. Delgado and J. Fabela each contributed multiple hits to keep the Cumberlands lineup rolling. The Patriots took advantage of some early miscues and put crooked numbers on the board in the second, third, and fourth innings before CCGA's defense settled in.
Coastal Georgia's run came in the second inning on an Ella Romano RBI single that scored Mackenzie Southerland, and the Mariners continued to compete throughout despite the deficit, putting runners on base late and forcing Cord to work for every out. The Mariner pitching staff also showed resilience, with Brooke Perdue retiring Cumberlands in order in the fifth inning and keeping the game from getting further out of hand.
The loss drops Coastal Georgia to 11-2, but it comes against a Cumberlands team that entered the tournament with a 10-4 record and clearly has the talent to compete with anyone in the country. With the Leadoff Classic still ongoing, the Mariners have a chance to respond and remind the field what made them 11-0 to begin with.
