Coastal Georgia kept its offense rolling Friday afternoon, taking Game 2 of its series against Ave Maria 9-1 to move to 28-5 on the season. The Mariners jumped on the Gyrenes early and never looked back, pounding out 12 hits and getting contributions up and down the lineup.
Ave Maria grabbed a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Haleigh Campbell grounded out to score Ashley Lykins, who had singled and stolen second. But the Mariners answered emphatically in the bottom half. Kaitlyn Carolino singled and stole second before eventually scoring on an RBI single by Rily Andrews. Brooke Perdue then delivered the big blow of the inning, ripping a two-run triple to score Andrews and put Coastal Georgia ahead for good. Mackenzie Southerland followed by reaching on an error that brought home Perdue, capping a four-run frame and putting the Mariners in front 4-1.
Coastal Georgia added three more in the second to all but end any suspense. Carolino reached on an error and stole second again before scoring on a steal by Andrews. Perdue then reached on an error and eventually scored, and Southerland added an RBI single to push the lead to 7-1. The Gyrenes simply had no answer for the Mariner lineup in the early innings, committing four of their five errors in the first two frames.
The Mariners closed out the scoring in the sixth with two more runs. Kate Owens came off the bench and delivered a clutch RBI double, and Emerson Askew followed with an RBI single to set the final at 9-1.
Emilia Clemons started in the circle and worked three innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three on 42 pitches to earn the win and improve to 10-1. McKenzie Collins took over in the fourth and was equally impressive, throwing three shutout innings and striking out two to close things out.
Carolino was the offensive standout of the afternoon, going a perfect 3-for-4 with a double and three stolen bases. Perdue finished 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBI. Andrews went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, Southerland added a hit and two RBI, and Askew, Owens, and Clemons each contributed hits in a well-rounded team effort.
The Mariners will look to complete the series sweep when they take on Ave Maria in the series finale.
