MELBOURNE, Fla. — The College of Coastal Georgia ran into one of the nation's elite programs Monday afternoon, falling 10-0 to Madonna University at the Leadoff Classic in Melbourne. The Crusaders, who entered the game at 14-1, were kept in check for four innings before an explosive ten-run fifth inning put the game away and handed the Mariners their third loss of the season.
For four innings, it was a genuine pitching duel. Rylee Mills was sharp and competitive, holding a potent Madonna lineup scoreless while striking out five through four frames. Camille Oyer was equally dominant on the other side, entering in relief in the first inning and retiring CCGA hitters with authority the rest of the way, striking out five and allowing just three hits across her five innings of work. The Mariners had their best opportunity in the first inning when Kaitlyn Carolino, Emma Jones, and Mills loaded the bases with no outs, but Oyer struck out the next three batters in order to escape the jam and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
The fifth inning unraveled quickly for the Mariners. A McKenzie Collins error opened the door, and Madonna took full advantage, sending thirteen batters to the plate and collecting eight hits in the frame. Brynn Anteau, who finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI on the day, was a thorn in the Mariners' side throughout the inning. Regan Finkbeiner went 3-for-4 as well and contributed with a stolen base and an RBI bunt single during the rally, while Carson Kuhlmann delivered a two-run single and Ashley Rosiewicz added a sacrifice fly to keep the runs coming. By the time the inning was over, Madonna had sent ten runs across and the mercy rule was triggered.
Mills took the loss to fall to 7-1 on the season, but her four innings of three-hit ball were far from the reason the game got away. The bullpen was unable to stop the bleeding once the fifth inning avalanche began, with Brooke Perdue allowing four runs in a third of an inning before Collins came on to limit further damage.
Jones was the offensive bright spot for CCGA, going 2-for-2 before being replaced, and Carolino also had a hit in what was otherwise a quiet afternoon for the Mariner bats against a quality Oyer. The loss drops Coastal Georgia to 16-3, but it comes against a Madonna program that entered the day as one of the top teams in the NAIA and played like it. The Mariners will look to regroup and respond as the tournament continues.
