The College of Coastal Georgia tennis programs faced a challenging road test on Friday, as both the women's and men's teams dropped 4-0 decisions to Southeastern University at the Lakeland Beerman Family Tennis Complex in Lakeland, Fla.
Women's Match: Coastal Georgia 0, Southeastern 4
The Mariner women were unable to gain any momentum against the Fire, falling in the doubles point without taking a set across all three courts. Southeastern claimed a dominant 6-0 victory at No. 1 over the pairing of Karlie Scott Kersey and Gabriella Rodrigues, while Isabella Garces and Irene Parigi handled Luna Feillon and Gabriela Miteva 6-2 at No. 2. The No. 3 match featuring Freya Zayyan and Manon Baudet was left unfinished after Coastal fell behind.
In singles, Southeastern wasted little time putting the match away. Alessia Ciampi posted a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Felicia Elixmann at No. 4 to give the Fire an early clinch, with Martina Picardi following at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Feillon. Isabella Garces then closed out the team point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Miteva at No. 1. Gabriella Rodrigues at No. 3 and Freya Zayyan at No. 5 were both competitive before their matches were halted with the result decided.
Men's Match: Coastal Georgia 0, Southeastern 4
The Mariner men found themselves in a similar situation, dropping the doubles point after Artur Pons Medina and Salvador Pons Medina fell 6-4 at No. 1 to Pedro De La Riva and Gustavo Rubio, and Caspar Grylls and Geronimo Gonzalez were handled 6-2 at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match between Max Kiramyr and Enzo Barauna was knotted at 5-5 before being left unfinished.
Singles play saw Southeastern strike quickly to clinch the match. Javier Gallego shut out Salvador Pons Medina 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, while Pedro De La Riva followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Gonzalo Tano at No. 3, and Nikolas Kumria closed out the team point with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Max Kiramyr at No. 6. Despite the team result being decided, Leonard Daguinot and Geronimo Gonzalez provided encouraging performances, each winning their opening sets at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively before their matches were halted. Artur Pons Medina also pushed Piero Fernandez to a second set at No. 1 before that match was left unfinished.
The Mariners will look to regroup as they continue their spring schedule.
