Coastal Splits with Ranked Team for the Third Time

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (18-8, 6-6 TSC) split with the no. 18 ranked Warner University Royals (24-10, 8-4 TSC). Coastal Georgia won the first game 9-7 in extra innings and lost the second 3-4. This is the third time this season that the Mariners have split with a team ranked on the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll.

Game One (Coastal Georgia 9, Warner 7)

Batting:

  • Cevana Wood batted 3-5 at the plate in the first game of today's doubleheader.
  • Mary Waldron hit 2-4 with three RBI and a walk. Waldron also stole a base and hit a sacrifice fly.
  • Sarah Thinger hit 2-6 at the plate recording two runs.
  • B. Peacock also recorded two hits in today's game. She hit 2-4 with three runs scored.
  • Melani Jones hit 2-5 with two runs scored.

Pitching:

  • Hayley Dickerson got the start for the Mariners. She recorded 7.2 innings in the circle. She allowed eight hits three runs, and one earned run. She walked four batters and struck out eight earning the win.
  • McGovern pitched 1.1 innings in relief. She allowed three hits, four runs, and one earned run. She struck out one batter.

Game Recap:

Neither team was able to score until the bottom of the fourth inning when Warner put up two runs and took a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, each team recorded four runs. Coastal Georgia scored two runs off five hits, one Royal error, and left two on base. B. Peacock started the inning off with a single through the left side. Wells followed that with a single and advanced Peacock to third. Rhodes reached on an error by the Royals catcher which scored Wells and B. Peacock. A third run scored after Thinger got on base, moved around the bases on a wild pitch and a single from Wood, and scored on a single from Rowell.

Not to be outdone, the Royals added four hits on four runs and one error making the game 6-4 in favor of Warner Royals.

Coastal Georgia added two runs in the top of the seventh. B. Peacock walked and advanced to second on the single from Jones. Wells laid down a sacrifice bunt to move each of the base runners into scoring position. B. Peacock scored on a wild pitch and Jones scored when Waldron singled up the middle. The game was tied 6-6.

Each team added a run in the eighth to make the score 7-7. Coastal Georgia had Thinger placed on second due to extra innings. She scored on an error by the left fielder. Warner scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Mariners won it in the ninth inning when they scored two runs. With B. Peacock placed on second, Jones singled moving her to third. She scored on a line out from Wells. The second run was scored when Waldron reached on an error. The Mariners clinched the first game win 9-7.

 

Game Two (Coastal Georgia 3, Warner 4)

Batting:

  • Two Mariners had a multi-hit game in game two of the doubleheader: Kayla Rowell and Jones. Rowell hit 3-4 at the plate with three RBI. Rowell recorded all three RBI in the game. Jones hit 2-3 with a walk.
  • Also recording his were: B. Peacock, Malarie Peacock, and Juliana Bellflower.

Pitching:

  • Ansley Bowen saw the whole game in the circle for the Mariners. She allowed 10 hits and four runs, only two of which were earned. She walked three batters and struck out three batters.

Game Recap:

Warner got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. They scored two runs off of four hits. Coastal Georgia was able to get out without further damage leaving three stranded on base.

Coastal Georgia remained down until the top of the fifth inning when they recorded three runs. M. Peacock started the inning with a double to right-center. Bellflower reached first on a fielding error but forced an out at third. Waldron reached on an error, B. Peacock walked and Wood reached on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Rowell hit a bases-clearing double scoring three. The Mariners took a 3-2 lead.

Coastal Georgia was able to hold onto the lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. The Royals were able to put up two runs off of three hits and an error. The Royals scored the last one with a triple, allowing them to take a 4-3 lead and get the split.
