Mariners Sweep No. 20 Royals in Regular Season Finale

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Mariners (29-11, 15-9) swept the No. 20 Warner University Royals (30-15, 14-10) to become the TSC regular-season runners-up. Coastal Georgia defeated the ranked Royals 3-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game.

Game One (Coastal Georgia 3, Warner 1)

Hitting:

  • Mary Waldron was big in the Mariner's offense in game one. She hit 2-2 at the plate scoring one run and recording one RBI. She also hit a double, walked, and stole two bases.
  • Melani Jones hit 2-3 also recording a run and RBI. One of her two hits was a double.
  • Also, recording hits were: Sarah Thinger, Samantha Hiley, and Rori Rhodes.

Pitching:

  • Hayley Dickerson pitched her fifth complete game of the season. She allowed only four hits, one run, and walked no batters. She struck out three of the 26 batters faced. Pitching five complete games is the most Dickerson has ever pitched in a season.

Game Recap:

Through the first three innings, the Mariners and the Royals duked it out of defense. Each team retired the other in three or four batters per inning and no runs were scored.

The Mariners got on board in the bottom of the fourth. Jones hit a double to start the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Wood. Jones was scored when Waldron hit a double that bounced off the top of the outfield wall. The Mariners scored the first run and took a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth Rori Rhodes started the inning off with a single down the right-field line. On a sacrifice bunt from Wells, she moved to second and Thinger hit a bunt single which moved her to third. She scored when Jones hit a single to left-center and the Mariners took a 2-0 lead.

The Royals got on the board in the top of the sixth when a sacrifice fly scored a runner from third. The score became 2-1.

The Mariners added a third run in the top of the sixth inning. Waldron started the inning off with a single, moved to second on a stolen base, and came home when Hiley hit a deep single to right field scoring Waldron.

The Mariners closed the game holding the No. 20 NAIA Warner Royals to just one run.

Game Two (Coastal Georgia 4, Warner 3)

Hitting:

  • B. Peacock had a multi-hit game for the Mariners. With her two hits, she tallied all four RBI. Her double and home run allowed the Mariners to score all four runs.
  • Thinger, Cevana Wood, and Malarie Peacock also recorded a hit in game two.

Pitching:

  • Bryce Peacock handled 6.1 innings and got the start for the Mariners. She allowed four hits, three runs, two earned runs, and struck out four. Her efforts in the mound earned her the win.
  • Dickerson came in for .2 innings of relief. She earned the last two outs and struck out one batter.

Game Recap:

The Royals got on the board first in game two. They put up two runs in the top of the third. The Royals got two on with a walk and an error. A bases-clearing singled scored two and Warner took a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third with a runner on base, B. Peacock hit a no doubter over the right centerfield wall. Her two-run home run tied the game 2-2.

Coastal Georgia added two more runs to take a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Mariners started the inning with a walk drown by Kayla Rowell. She moved to second when Rhodes reached on an error. On a sacrifice bunt, both of them moved into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases. B. Peacock came in clutch again, with a two-RBI double giving the Mariners the lead. This was Bryce's fourth RBI of the game in four at-bats.

On the first pitch in the top of the seventh inning, Warner hit a home run to close the gap 3-4. The Royals could not finish the comeback effort and Coastal Georgia earned their eight wins in a row. With the sweep, the Mariners become the Sun Conference Regular Season Runners-up and a second-place seed in the conference tournament.
