Box Score BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Coastal Georgia women's basketball team (1-8, 0-2) fell to Brewton-Parker (8-2, 1-1) by a score of 88-77 on Tuesday night.
Seniors Joyce Jordan and Sonia Forney led the way for the Mariners offensively scoring 23 and 21 points, respectively. Forney also notched her seventh double-double of the season, grabbing 13 rebounds.
Kelsey Leedle also finished with double-digit points dropping in 13. Azaria Varnado and Gabby Litvak rounded out the rest of the major scorers as they each recorded six points.
Varnado and Litvak also combined for 12 assists, Varnado's seven led the team.
Andrian Voorhies got her first minutes as a Mariner this season. She came in off the bench and recorded four points and two rebounds but quickly got into foul trouble.
As a team, the Mariners shot 51.8 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from three. The Barons matched that field goal percentage at 50 percent but also shot 50 percent from the three-point line.
22 Mariner turnovers to just nine by the Barons ultimately made the difference. Coastal Georgia was able to outrebound the Barons and record more assists, but their mistakes led to 25 Baron points.
How It Happened:
1st QUARTER: The Mariners came out strong and led the game 20-12 with 2:14 to go in the first quarter. Andrian Voorhies came in off the bench and scored back-to-back layups for the Mariners as they increased their lead. The Barons were able to make some plays of their own, however, and cut the Mariner's lead to 22-19 at the end of the first.
2nd QUARTER: Second quarter was all Barons. After a quick 6-2 run by the Mariners, Brewton-Parker went on to outscore the Mariners 21-9 thanks to 12 Coastal Georgia turnovers. The Barons took a 42-37 lead into the break.
3rd QUARTER: Gabby Litvak came out of the break and hit a big three to cut the Baron's lead down to 42-40, but Brewton-Parker responded with a quick 6-0. The Barons were able to stretch out their lead and were up 65-53 heading into the final quarter.
4th QUARTER: The Mariners were able to get it close a couple of times, but the Barons always responded quickly. The Barons went on to win 87-77.
